Anderson Tallies Fifth Double-Double as R-MC Falls to Hartwick

BAYAMON, P.R.—Senior Katie Anderson (Beaverdam, Va. / Beaverdam) recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds as the Randolph-Macon women's basketball team dropped a 61-57 decision to Hartwick Saturday morning in the Puerto Rico Sports Classic.

Senior Hannah Livermon (Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan) led the team with 16 points and senior Khajae Hester (Virginia Beach, Va. / Cape Henry Collegiate) added 11 points.

The score was tied at 4-4 with 6:35 remaining in the first quarter before the Yellow Jackets (5-4) went on a 6-2 spurt to hold a 10-6 advantage. The Hawks (2-5) responded with a 6-0 run to hold a 12-10 lead at the end of the quarter.

Senior Lauren Vugteveen (Midlothian, Va. / Amelia Academy) made the first basket of the second quarter to tie the score at 12-12 with 9:35 remaining. The Hawks tallied a 15-2 run to hold their largest lead of the game with 3:56 to play until halftime. Livermon stopped the run for the Hawks with a three-pointer to put the Yellow Jackets within ten points. The Hawks held a 27-17 lead at halftime.

R-MC outscored the Hawks in the two remaining quarters. Livermon tallied a three-pointer early in the third quarter to cut the Yellow Jackets' deficit to nine points. Hartwick extended its lead back to eleven points, 35-24, with 5:52 remaining. R-MC went on a 5-0 spurt to erase a double-digit deficit capped by a three-point jump shot from freshman Jayla Wade (Newport News, Va. / Heritage). The Hawks held a 40-34 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Anderson made a layup with 7:57 remaining in the final quarter to put R-MC within four points. The Hawks stretched their lead back to six points before Anderson scored another bucket followed by a three-pointer from Wade to make the score 46-45. The Yellow Jackets were not able to gain the advantage as Hartwick used a 4-0 run to maintain a 50-45 lead with 5:40 to play. R-MC came within two points at 54-52 but the Hawks went on to claim the 61-57 win.

Vugteveen tallied eight points, nine rebounds and two blocks for the Yellow Jackets.

Wade led the reserves with a season-high eight points.

The Yellow Jackets return home on Sunday, Jan. 3 at 2 p.m. against Greensboro.
