ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon Athletics is saddened to learn of the passing of former women's basketball, women's lacrosse and field hockey coach Linda Lerch, a pioneer in the early years of Yellow Jacket women's athletics.
Lerch served as Randolph-Macon's head women's basketball coach from 1979-81, helping guide the program during a pivotal time in its history. Under her leadership, the Yellow Jackets transitioned into NCAA Division III competition and earned the program's first postseason appearance.
In addition to leading the women's basketball program, Lerch also served as head coach of the Yellow Jacket women's lacrosse and field hockey programs during her time in Ashland.
Following her time in Ashland, Lerch continued a distinguished collegiate coaching career, including serving as head women's basketball coach at Cornell University and later working as an assistant coach at James Madison University.
Lerch's influence extended beyond wins and losses, as she helped create opportunities for female student-athletes during a transformative era in collegiate athletics.
The Randolph-Macon Athletics family extends its deepest condolences to Lerch's family, friends, former players, and colleagues.
