ASHLAND, Va. — Randolph-Macon Athletics mourns the passing of former coach Jay Starke, whose lasting impact on the Yellow Jackets community extended far beyond the basketball court.
Starke served as an assistant women's basketball coach at Randolph-Macon College from 2004-2017 under former head coach
Carroll LaHaye. He dedicated his life to leadership, service, and mentorship. In recognition of his contributions to the program and the college community, he was inducted into the Randolph-Macon Athletics Hall of Fame with the 2004 women's basketball national semifinal team.
A graduate of Douglas Freeman High School and the University of Richmond, Starke built a respected coaching career that also included stops at J.R. Tucker High School and Saint Gertrude High School. Known for his passion for developing student-athletes and his ability to connect with others, he left a lasting impression on generations of players, coaches, and colleagues.
Beyond athletics, Starke was deeply involved in civic life and politics, dedicating years of service to political campaigns and community initiatives. In 1990, he demonstrated his commitment to public service by running for the United States Congress.
A successful businessman, Starke served as President of Starke & Associates while also volunteering extensively with organizations including SCORE, Kiwanis Club of Richmond, Virginia Voice, and the Democratic Party of Virginia. He was admired for his generosity, thoughtful leadership, and remarkable ability to make others feel valued and heard.
