Box Score SWEET BRIAR, Va. – Junior Amanda Sopko (Skippers, Va./Greensville) went 6 for 7 with three doubles and six runs as Randolph-Macon swept an ODAC doubleheader from Sweet Briar on Wednesday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (17-7, 9-5) took the opener 13-1 before claiming the nightcap 10-1. Each game went five innings.
In Game 1, R-MC used a six-run second and a four-run fourth to take control. Sopko went 3 for 3 with two doubles, two steals and three runs, while junior Sharese Jarvis (Cobbs Creek, Va./Mathews) was 3 for 4 with three runs, two steaks and one RBI. Sophomore Christine Simon (Richmond, Va./James River) had two hits and two runs, while sophomores Jenna Best (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) and Sam Moore (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) both doubled and drove in a pair for the Yellow Jackets.
Freshman Kelsey McLaughlin (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman), the reigning ODAC Pitcher of the Week, nearly tossed a no-hitter for R-MC. She allowed a one-out home run in the fifth for the lone hit for the Vixens (4-15, 0-10). McLaughlin did not walk a batter and struck out six in raising her record to 9-4.
R-MC put up four in the top of the first in Game 2 on its way to the sweep. Sopko went 3 for 4 with a double, a homer, three runs and three RBI, while Moore was 4 for 4 with two doubles, three runs and two RBI for the Yellow Jackets.
Best (8-3) allowed four hits and a run in four innings with no walks and four punchouts to earn the victory.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Saturday, April 12 for an ODAC doubleheader at 1:30 p.m.
