ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph Macon women's tennis team fell to the visiting Maroons of Roanoke 6-3 in conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Banks Tennis Center.
The loss dropped the Yellow Jackets to 3-2 in ODAC play and 8-5 overall.
In doubles, freshmen Molly Jesseman (Williamsburg, Va./Warhill) and Melissa Tomlin (Prince George, Va./Prince George) scored the only doubles point for the Yellow Jackets, winning a hard-fought, 9-7 decision against Lydia Dey and Kristen McDowell at the Number 3 position. Freshman Kelsie Grice (Hoover, Ala./Charlotte Country Day) and senior Olayemisi Ogunshina (Baltimore, Md./Wilde Lake) pushed Emily Henderson and Reed Kegel to the limit, before falling 8-6.
In singles, Grice scored a win at the Number 2 position, defeating Briell Smith 6-3, 6-2. Tomlin won the Jackets' other singles point, taking down Emma Barker 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5. At the Number 1 position, sophomore Angelina Sportelli (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) lost to Roanoke's Jennifer Antoszyk, falling in two close sets 6-4, 6-4.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Monday when they host Guilford College at 3:30 p.m. at the Banks Tennis Center.
