ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore Christine Simon (Richmond, Va./James River) went 4 for 5 with a home run and three RBI as Randolph-Macon swept an ODAC softball doubleheader from Shenandoah Friday afternoon at the R-MC Softball Field.
The Yellow Jackets (22-10, 12-8) rallied to win the opener, 5-3, before taking the nightcap, 4-1.
In Game 1, the Hornets (10-21, 8-10) got a three-run homer from Lindsay Corbin in the top of the first. R-MC responded in the bottom of the frame as Simon led off with a single and scored on a wild pitch.
The Yellow Jackets tied it an inning later as freshman Katie Lockett (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) delivered an RBI single and sophomore Sam Moore (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) added a sacrifice fly to knot the score at 3-3.
R-MC snapped the tie in the third as Lockett and Simon contributed RBI singles to make it 5-3.
Freshman Kelsey McLaughlin (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) was dominant on the mound after a shaky first inning. She tossed a three-hitter with five strikeouts to raise her record to 12-5.
The Yellow Jackets used power to take the lead for good in Game 2. Simon had a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first, her second long ball of the season. Moore belted her league-leading 10th dinger one batter later to give R-MC a 2-0 advantage.
Shenandoah cut the deficit in half with a run in the top of the fourth before a sacrifice fly by Simon in the bottom of the frame pushed the margin back to two at 3-1. Moore singled and scored on a double by junior Sharese Jarvis (Cobbs Creek, Va./Mathews) in the fifth to complete the scoring.
Sophomore Jenna Best (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) earned the win in the nightcap to improve to 10-5. She scattered six hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
Simon has 53 hits on the season, second in the ODAC and one away from the program record of 54 set by sophomore Madison Gilman (Glen Allen, Va./Patrick Henry) a season ago.
R-MC can finish no lower than fourth in the ODAC standings. The ODAC Championship will be held next weekend in Salem, Va. The Yellow Jackets will learn their seed and first-round opponent on Monday evening following the completion of the conference's regular season.
