Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Sharese Jarvis (Cobbs Creek, Va./Mathews) and sophomore Katie Woody (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) both scored four runs as the Randolph-Macon softball team swept a doubleheader from Southern Virginia at the R-MC Softball Field.
The Yellow Jackets (20-10) took the opener 12-0 before claiming an 8-0 decision in the nightcap. Both contests went five innings.
Jarvis had a leadoff single in the second in Game 1 and Woody reached on a fielder's choice. Both scored in the three-run frame. An inning later, Jarvis had a leadoff walk and came home on a base hit by sophomore Jenna Best (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge). Woody singled and scored on an error. Senior Carolyn Gilbertson (McLean, Va./McLean) highlighted the fiver-run third with a two-run homer, her first of the season, to make it a 7-0 contest.
Sophomore Madison Gilman (Glen Allen, Va./Patrick Henry) had a leadoff homer to spark a four-run fourth. Woody tripled and scored in the frame.
Woody and Best both had two hits and three runs, while Gilbertson went 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBI. Best also knocked in a pair against the Knights (5-22).
Freshman Kelsey McLaughlin (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) earned the win to raise her record to 11-5. She allowed one hit in four innings with one walk and four strikeouts. Junior Carly Alford (Richmond, Va./Trinity) fanned two in the ninth to preserve the shutout.
Best tossed a three-hit shutout in Game 2, surrendering three hits in five innings with no walks and two strikeouts to improve to 9-5.
After a scoreless first, Gilman had a leadoff single and came in on a base hit by Woody to make it 1-0.
Jarvis and sophomore Sam Moore both had two-run homers in a five-run third as the Yellow Jackets took a 6-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the fifth, Jarvis had a leadoff single and scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-0. Woody reached on an error and scored the final run of the contest on a single by Gilbertson.
Moore and Jarvis both had two hits and two RBI in the nightcap.
Randolph-Macon concludes the regular season at home on Friday, April 18 with a 3 p.m. ODAC doubleheader against Shenandoah at the R-MC Softball Field.
