Simon Leads R-MC to Doubleheader Sweep at Methodist

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Sophomore Christine Simon (Richmond, Va./James River) went 6 for 9 with two doubles, a triple, two runs and three RBI as the Randolph-Macon softball team extended its win streak to five with a doubleheader sweep at Methodist on Thursday.

The Yellow Jackets (11-5) took the opener 10-1 and captured Game 2 by a score of 5-3.

In Game 1, Simon had a leadoff double and scored to spark a three-run first for R-MC. Sophomore Jenna Best (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) had a two-run triple in the third and Simon singled and scored in the fourth as the Yellow Jackets built a 6-0 lead. After the Monarchs (8-21) tallied a run in the sixth, Simon added an RBI single in a four-run seventh.

Best (6-2) also went the distance on the mound for R-MC, allowing four hits and one unearned run over seven innings with no walks and four strikeouts. 

In the nightcap, Simon snapped a scoreless tie with an RBI triple in the fourth. Methodist rallied for three in the bottom of the frame to take its first lead of the afternoon. The Yellow Jackets responded by putting up four in the top of the fifth. Junior Amanda Sopko (Skippers, Va./Greensville) tied the game with a two-run homer to left. Best singled, stole second and scored the go-ahead run on a double by freshman Ashley Stauffer (Elizabeth City, N.C./Northeastern). Simon plated Stauffer with an RBI double to give R-MC a 5-3 advantage.

Freshman Kelsey McLaughlin (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) raised her record to 5-3 with the victory, going seven innings with eight hits, three runs (two earned), no walks and four strikeouts. 

Randolph-Macon returns to ODAC play this weekend. The Yellow Jackets travel to Randolph on Saturday, March 29 for a 1 p.m. doubleheader. R-MC returns home to face Guilford on Sunday, March 30 at 2 p.m. for a doubleheader. Sunday will be the Strike Out Cancer games.
