Box Score ASHLAND, VA – Randolph-Macon Baseball pounded out 15 hits and took advantage of six errors on the way to a 13-5 victory over York College (Pa.) Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets conclude the 2013 regular season Sunday, May 5th when they host Wesley College for senior day at 1:00.
R-MC (23-16-1) opened up the offense in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Michael Trentham that scored Jake Fletcher.
Senior Austin Carpenter singled through the right side in the second to drive in Tim Benjamin. The Yellow Jackets extended the lead to 3-0 when Mark Heideman broke for home and scored on a wild pitch.
Benjamin's sacrifice fly in the third along with Trentham scoring on another wild pitch pushed the R-MC edge to 5-0.
The Spartans (21-21) cracked the scoring column in the top of the fourth after Andrew Hershey led off with a single and later scored on Colbe Herr's single to left.
York cut the deficit to just one after putting up three runs in the fifth inning, two coming on a Jimmy King single up the middle.
Randolph-Macon responded in the bottom half with three runs of their own. Two runners crossed on Spartan errors while Benjamin drove in a run with a single to push the advantage to 8-4.
R-MC sent ten batters to the dish in the eighth for five runs on six hits. Benjamin and Michael Kroll led off with a pair of singles before Heideman reached on an error, scoring Benjamin. Michael Helbig stepped to the plate two batters later and delivered a single to right, loading the bases for Jeb Weymouth. Weymouth then knocked a two run double down the line in right and Trentham plated a pair of runs with a single to cap the inning.
York added a run in the ninth before Randolph-Macon's closer Will Jennings retired the final out of the 13-5 victory.
Jake Bram earned his third win of the season after allowing four earned on seven hits with two strikeouts in five innings of work. Sid Harvey, Tanner Phillips and Glenn McLaughlin combined for three innings of scoreless relief while Jennings allowed one earned run in an inning on the bump.
Trentham went 3-for-5 with three runs batting in while Travis Lodge also had a 3-for-5 performance. Benjamin finished 3-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs and Weymouth added a pair of hits and two RBI.
Dan Gurganas allowed four earned runs in four innings on the mound in the loss for York. David Walker gave up six runs, none of them earned, in four innings of relief.
Justin Cohen and Herr paced the Spartan attack with a pair of hits and an RBI each.
