Box Score ASHLAND, VA – Randolph-Macon Baseball (20-16-1/10-9-1 ODAC) rallied in the ninth inning to defeat Hampden-Sydney 2-1 and stave off elimination in the 2013 ODAC Baseball Tournament Saturday night. The Yellow Jackets need two wins Sunday, April 28th against Bridgewater to claim the ODAC Title with the first game time set for 11:00 AM.
After eight scoreless innings of baseball, Matt Fischgrund led off the ninth with a triple to right field for R-MC. Michael Trentham followed with a triple of his own into left field to score Fischgrund and break the scoreless tie. Travis Lodge then stepped to the dish and hit a fly ball to center that allowed Trentham to tag up from third and score for a crucial insurance run.
Hampden-Sydney threatened in the bottom of the ninth with a leadoff double from Beau Flinchum who advanced to third on an infield single by James Keller. With two outs in the inning, Flinchum crossed the plate after an error that left the tying run just 90 feet away.
The Yellow Jackets closer Will Jennings then settled in and struck out the final Tigers' batter to give R-MC the 2-1 victory.
Freshman starting pitcher Daniel Byrd tossed a gem on the mound for Randolph-Macon. Byrd went eight innings and allowed no earned runs, eight hits and struck out one for his third win of the season. Jennings gave up just one hit and struck out two to pick up his seventh save.
Fischgrund had the Yellow Jackets only multi-hit game going 2-for-4 with a triple.
Flinchum went 2-for-4 at the dish with a double and scored the Tigers' lone run. Jeff Gray also added a pair of hits.
Aaron Stidham is stuck with the loss for Hampden-Sydney after allowing two runs in two and two thirds innings of relief. Billy Nixon tossed six and a third scoreless innings for a no decision.
