Box Score ASHLAND, VA – Randolph-Macon Baseball rallied for nine runs in the eighth inning to complete a season sweep of Virginia Wesleyan 14-5 Tuesday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets return to action Thursday, April 4th when they host Mary Washington for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
The Marlins looked to be in command early when Matt Ittner hit a leadoff homerun to right. VWC tacked on a run in the third and in the fourth on a Brett Sutryk RBI double to take a 3-0 edge.
Nate Meiners answered for R-MC in the bottom of the fourth with a double to right center which scored Jeb Weymouth and Michael Trentham.
Mitchell Keeler doubled in the fifth and advanced to third on a Jake Fletcher single before scoring on a balk to tie the game at 3-3.
Randolph-Macon took their first lead of the day when Nick Williamson stepped to the plate with two runners in scoring position and delivered a two run single up the middle.
Virginia Wesleyan rallied with two outs in the top of the seventh and plated two runs on a Jordan Miller double down the right field line which tied the game at 5-5.
The Yellow Jackets' offense came to life in the bottom of the eighth scoring nine runs on six hits and sending a total of 12 batters to the plate. Fletcher laid down a bunt with runners at the corners to plate the first run. Trentham then singled home a run before Travis Lodge sacrificed in runner for the second out of the inning. Michael Kroll stepped up two batters later and delivered a two run single while Williamson followed with an RBI single through the left side. Keeler capped the nine run outburst with a three run homerun over the wall in left.
Will Jennings came on to pitch the final inning for the Yellow Jackets and struck out two before inducing a fly ball to left for the final out.
Keeler led R-MC with a 4-for-5 outing at the plate and drove in three runs. Meiners finished 3-for-3 with a double and drove in a pair while Williamson added three hits and drove in three runs. Trentham chipped in with three singles and plated a run.
Glenn McLaughlin allowed two runs in two innings of relief to pick up his second win of the season. Starter Matt Fischgrund struck out six and allowed just two earned runs in six innings of work in the no decision.
VWC's Evan Polk finished 2-for-4 at the plate while Josh Miller and Ittner added a pair of hits each.
Alex Tucci is stuck with the loss after allowing nine earned runs in two and two thirds innings of relief.
