Box Score VIRIGINIA BEACH, VA – Randolph-Macon Baseball (9-9 / 5-4 ODAC) picked up a key 5-3 win over ODAC foe Virginia Wesleyan College Wednesday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets return to action Thursday, March 28th when they travel to York College (Pa.) for a 3:30 contest.
Walks to Mitchell Keeler and Jon Witt along with a single from Jake Fletcher loaded the bases for R-MC's Designated Hitter Matt Fischgrund in the top of the first. Fischgrund then ripped a double to left, scoring two and giving the Yellow Jackets an early edge.
Virginia Wesleyan answered with a run of their own in the bottom half when Casey Bryant sacrificed home a runner.
Randolph-Macon extended their lead back to two in the second after Keeler sacrificed home Mark Heideman who led off with a single.
The Yellow Jackets led 4-3 in the eighth inning before Fischgrund and Michael Trentham hit back to back doubles to extend the advantage to two.
Greg McLaughlin and Will Jennings tossed scoreless eighth and ninth innings to preserve the 5-3 Randolph-Macon victory.
Fischgrund paced R-MC at the plate going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBI. Fletcher added two singles and Witt finished 1-for-2 and drew a walk.
Daniel Byrd improved to 2-1 on the season after tossing six and third innings. The freshman allowed just three runs on five hits while striking out five. Sid Harvey did not allow a hit in two thirds of an inning on the mound. Will Jennings earned his fourth save of the season after striking out three in the ninth.
The Marlins totaled eight singles and no extra bases hits for the game. Bryant led the way with a 2-for-3 performance. Reid Hoffler is saddled with the loss after giving up three runs over five innings.
