Box Score 2 ASHLAND, VA – Randolph-Macon Baseball split their ODAC doubleheader with No. 11 Shenandoah Saturday afternoon in Ashland. The Yellow Jackets took game one 10-9 thanks to timely hitting in the middle innings.
Jon Witt got the scoring going early, singling down the left field live to drive in Jeb Weymouth to make it 1-0. After Shenandoah answered with three runs in the second, R-MC (8-9 overall / 4-4 ODAC) would score multiple runs during the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
Weymouth doubled home Jake Fletcher in the third, which was followed by a Michael Trentham two run single two batters later to give the Yellow Jackets the 4-3 lead.
After Shenandoah evened the score at 4-4, Fletcher blasted a two-run home run in the fourth to give R-MC the lead 6-4.
The Yellow Jackets would tack on two runs in both the fifth and the sixth to give R-MC a 10-4 lead. Nate Meiners drove in two, while Trentham added a RBI groundout. Travis Lodge also singled home a run in the sixth.
Shenandoah rallied in the ninth, thanks to a three-run blast to right by Andrew Creamer that brought the Hornets within one.
Freshman Will Jennings shut the door however, getting the next batter to fly out to left. Jennings earned his third save of the season.
Michael Helbig gave R-MC another solid start on the mound, tossing seven innings while only giving up three earned runs. For his efforts, Helbig earned his third win.
Shenandoah would come back and take the nightcap of the doubleheader, winning 8-4.
The Hornets started early, scoring three runs in the first off R-MC starter Jake Bram.
However, the Yellow Jackets would answer in the second. Meiners delivered a bases loaded double, bringing home Trentham and Witt. Freshman After freshman Nick Williamson added a RBI groundout, Meiners would come around to score on a fielding error by the Hornets to give R-MC the 4-3 lead.
Bram would settle down, holding Shenandoah scoreless until the fifth. Creamer added another RBI single, tying the game at 4-4.
Creamer again came up big for SU, homering to right field in the seventh to give the Hornets the lead. John Wilt added another run for Shenandoah in the frame, singling to right field to give SU a 6-4 lead.
The Hornets would tack on two runs in the ninth, giving the Hornets the 8-4 win and a split.
Randolph-Macon returns to action this Tuesday, March 26, when they travel to York (Pa.) for a 3:30 non-conference contest.
