Box Score ASHLAND, VA – Fueled by six scoreless innings on the mound from Michael Helbig and a six run first inning, Randolph-Macon opened the 2013 season with an 18-4 victory over St. Mary's of Maryland Saturday afternoon in Ashland.
Helbig (1-0) allowed just three hits over six innings of work. He struck out six and walked just two, while the R-MC offense banged out 16 hits on the day.
Michael Trentham had two hits and drove in four runs in his first collegiate game. Fellow freshmen Michael Kroll and Travis Lodge also had two hits on the day, while sophomore backstop Tim Benjamin had a pair of hits in the win.
Jon Witt drove in four runs, including a three-run home run. Trentham drove in four and scored four runs from his leadoff spot in the lineup.
Five of R-MC's six runs in the opening inning came with two outs. The Yellow Jackets used five hits, including a two run single from Trentham. Randolph-Macon also took advantage of three walks by Seahawk starter Zach Nadolny.
The score would stay at 6-0 until Randolph-Macon blew the game open with a seven run sixth inning that was highlighted by Witt's first round tripper of the year.
Alex Lenovitz, Jared Eaker and Michael O'Neil all had two hits for SMC. Nadolny (0-1) took the loss on the mound after going just two-thirds of an inning.
The two teams will be back in action on Sunday when with a doubleheader set to start at Noon.
