Guilford Holds Off R-MC Women's Lax for an 18-16 ODAC Win

GREENSBORO, NC – Guilford was able to build a six goal lead late in the second half and held off a furious Randolph-Macon rally as the Quakers topped the Yellow Jackets 18-16 in ODAC Women's Lacrosse action in Greensboro on Sunday.

Erin Clare Cassidy and Elyse Cooper each had six goals to lead the R-MC offense, while Kelly Egan had a hat trick and dished out four helpers to notch seven points on the afternoon. Holly Sargeant had one goal and three helpers for four points.

GC (4-9 / 3-3 ODAC) was paced by a six goal performance from Summer Frazier that was complimented by four scores from E'Leyna Garcia and a hat trick from Shannon Kanola. Reegan Carbon and Liza Mettler combined to make nine stops for Guilford which was outshot by R-MC 37-25.

The Quakers scored the first five goals before back-to-back Cassidy tallies with just over 20 minutes to go in the opening half made the score 5-2.

After a Kathryn Carella strike made it 6-2 in favor of GC, Cooper scored the first of her three straight goals from Egan for the natural hat trick and pulled R-MC to within one at 6-5 with 6:24 to go in the half.

Back-to-back goals by the Quakers put them back out in front 8-5. After the teams exchanged goals, R-MC would head to the locker room down 9-7 after Cassidy scored with just two seconds to go.

Cooper pulled R-MC within one on a goal set up by Audrey Hester 43 seconds into the second stanza.

GC rallied, going on a four goal run, making it 13-8 when Frazier scored with 15:40 to play in the contest.

The Yellow Jackets fought back with goals by Sargeant and Egan to cut it to 13-10, but consecutive scores by the Quakers pushed their lead to 15-10 with 9:33 to play.

A Cassidy goal with 7:10 to play made the score 16-12, before Garcia and Frazier scored 31 seconds apart, giving GC the 18-12 advantage with just 6:11 on the clock.

Randolph-Macon mounted its comeback with 4:00 to play when Cooper got things going with a goal on a free-position shot.

Egan then scored with 1:38 to play and Cassidy followed with a tally just 23 seconds later to make the score 18-15.

Cassidy scored with 29 seconds left on the clock but that was a close as the Jackets got as Guilford won the ensuing draw and ran out the clock.

Randolph-Macon will be back in action on Wednesday when it takes on Christopher Newport at 5:00 p.m.
