Box Score ASHLAND, VA – St. Mary's used a pair of four goal runs during the second half to pull away from home standing Randolph-Macon 16-9 in women's lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon.
R-MC (0-3) was led by Kelly Egan who had three goals in a losing effort, while Erin Clare Cassidy and Elyse Cooper each had a pair of scores in the game as well. Alex Flammia made 11 saves in the cage for R-MC.
The SeaHawks took an early 2-0 lead on back-to-back goals by Aubrey Mirkin before R-MC got back-to-back strikes from Cooper to knot the game up at 2-2 with 17:36 left in the half.
The teams exchanged goals, before SMC reeled off four straight scores to take a 7-3 advantage when Emily Shafer scored with 1:43 to go in the first half.
R-MC's Erin Clare Cassidy tallied her second goal of the first stanza with just 46 remaining to send the teams to the locker room with SMC up 7-4.
The second half was scoreless for 8:30 of play before SMC's Lauren Gray pushed the SeaHawk lead to 8-4.
R-MC's Emily Lynch responded with a solo strike just 20 seconds later to pull R-MC back within three at 8-5.
The Seahawks went on a decisive four goal run following Lynch's tally, taking a 12-5 advantage after back-to-back goals by Erin Shackelford.
Holly Sargeant and Kelly Egan scored to cut the R-MC deficit to 12-7 with 7:50 to go in the game, but that would be as close as the Jackets would get as St. Mary's notched four unanswered goals, extending its lead to 16-7 with just under two minutes to go on a Shackelford score.
SMC (4-2) held a 34-21 advantage in shots, while R-MC snared 18 groundballs to SMC's 15.
Mirkin and Shackelford each scored three goals in win, while Colleen Simpson made six stops in the cage for SMC.
Randolph-Macon will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Cedar Crest at 12:00 pm in Ashland.
