ASHLAND, VA – No. 14 Washington and Lee topped
Randolph-Macon 9-8 Sunday afternoon in ODAC Women's Lacrosse action
in Ashland.
R-MC (7-4 / 5-3 ODAC) took an early 2-0 lead just 1:55 into the
contest on goals by Erin Clare Cassidy and Emily Kent.
WLU 's (10-4 / 7-0 ODAC) Christina Benedetti then scored
back-to-back goals, knotting the game at 2-2 on a Maddie
McKaig feed with just over 23 minutes to play in the half.
A Logan Pomeroy free-position goal with 19:31 to go vaulted R-MC
to a one-goal advantage before Bendentti tied the game at 3-3 and
Emmy Mathews tallied the go-ahead goal to put WLU up 4-3.
Elyse Cooper scored on an assist from Emily Kent to tie the game
and Pomeroy put the Jackets back out in front 5-4 on a score with
11:20 to play in the first stanza.
After the teams exchanged goals, the Generals got the final two
scores of the half to take a 7-6 edge into the intermission.
Washington and Lee's Kate Donnelly opened the second half
scoring and pushed the Generals in front 8-6 on an unassisted goal
with just under 23 minutes to play in the game.
The scored remained way until a Cassidy unassisted score with
11:14 to play pulled the Jackets within one.
With R-MC trailing 8-7, Cassidy scored the equalizer on a
free-position shot with 6:33 to play in the game. WLU's
Meredith Freeman then took the ensuing draw control, marched
down field and scored what proved the game-winning goal just 10
seconds later.
Cassidy led R-MC with a hat trick, while Cooper and Pomeroy each
had pair of goals. Alex Flammia made all five of her saves in
the second half of play.
Benedetti scored a game-high four goals, while McKaig chipped in
with two scores and Katharine Farrar made eight stops in net for
Washington and Lee.
Randolph-Macon will be off until Saturday when it will host a
quarterfinal game of the 2010 ODAC Tournament against an opponent
and a time to be announced.
