ASHLAND, VA—Randolph-Macon Baseball scored 18 runs on 23
hits en route to a doubleheader sweep of ODAC foe Emory and Henry
College 8-1 and 10-1 in Ashland Sunday. The Yellow Jackets have won
five of their last six games to improve their record to 10-9
overall and 7-3 in the ODAC.
Brian Jordan (Columbia, VA/ Goochland) doubled home Ryan Hughes
(Crozet, VA/ Western Albemarle) in the third inning of game one to
put R-MC on the board. Jordan would score later in the inning on a
Jeb Weymouth (Rockville, VA/ Hanover) sacrifice fly, putting the
Jackets up 2-0.
Both teams would be held scoreless until Randolph-Macon rallied
for six runs in the bottom of the sixth. A single from Jordan
Walton (Mechanicsville, VA/ Lee Davis) and walks to Weymouth and
Jay Lichter (Richmond, VA/ Varina) loaded the bases for Cory
Jackson (Beaverdam, VA/ PH-Ashland) who was then hit by a pitch. A
passed ball allowed the Jackets to go up 4-0 before James Bierlein
(Chesterfield, VA/ Matoaca) doubled down the left field line,
scoring Lichter and Jackson.
Jordan kept the rally alive with an RBI infield single and a
Kevin Davis (Hanover, VA/ Hanover) RBI double down the right field
line put the Jackets up 8-0.
This would be more than enough run support for R-MC starting
pitcher Kyle Hicks (Goochland, VA/ Goochland) who allowed just one
run on five hits with nine strikeouts, earning the complete game
win.
Jordan paced the Jackets at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a
double and two RBI. Michael Helbig (Midlothian, VA/ Midlothian)
went 2-for-3 and Bierlein finished with a double and two RBI.
Zach Jones takes the loss for the Wasps, allowing three earned
runs on five hits in five innings of work.
Nick Windom led Emory and Henry offensively with two hits.
Randolph-Macon continued their hot hitting in game two, pushing
across three runs on three hits in the first inning. Walton singled
home Jordan to push across the first run. Lichter then hit an RBI
double to left center before Bryan Hannum (Richmond, VA/ James
River) capped the inning with an RBI sacrifice fly.
Jordan doubled home Bierlein in the second and later scored on a
passed ball, giving the Jackets a 5-0 lead after two innings.
RBI singles from Davis and Walton, along with a run scoring
error by the Wasps in the fourth, extended the R-MC lead to 8-0.
Emory and Henry's Eric Houff prevented the shutout with an RBI
infield single in the top of the seventh but Randolph-Macon tacked
on a run in both the sixth and seventh innings to pull away for the
10-1 victory.
Davis finished the game 4-for-5 with an RBI to lead the Jackets.
Lichter improved his team leading batting average to .426 after a
3-for-4 game with three doubles and two RBI. Walton and Jordan also
drove in two runs each.
The freshman Helbig allowed just one run on seven hits with nine
strikeouts in six and two thirds innings of work for the win. His
classmate Justin Thorn (Mechanicsville, VA/ Hanover) threw two and
a third scoreless innings with two strikeouts in relief.
Anthony Lowry went 3-for-4 with a walk and a double to lead the
Wasps.
Jessup Lambert picks up the loss after allowing five runs on six
hits in three innings on the mound.
The Yellow Jackets have outscored their opponents 60-19 over
their last four games and currently hold the second spot in the
ODAC standings with a 7-3 conference record.
Randolph-Macon travels to Mary Washington Tuesday, March 30th
for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game.
