The Basics
Score: (RV) Randolph-Macon 19, (RV) Mary Washington 5
Venue: Fredericksburg, Va. // University of Mary Washington
Records: (RV) Randolph-Macon (21-12, 11-7 ODAC), (RV) Mary Washington (22-11, 2-1 C2C)
How It Happened:
- Randolph-Macon started the scoring early, as an Eagle throwing error put Zach Wernoski (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) on first, before Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) walked to get runners on first and second. With one out, Logan Duff (Forest, Valley./Liberty Christian) singled through the left side to load the bases. Zach Stolze (Towson, Md./Loyola Blakefield) used a sacrifice fly to give his team a 1-0 lead, as Wernoski tagged up.
- In the following inning, Jon Quici (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) got on as a result of a fielding error, before ground balls from Caleb Hawton-Henley (Fairfax, Va./St. John's Prep) and Jack Bowles (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) moved him to third. Wernoski drove him in with a single to take a 2-0 lead, before a double from Schmitt extended the lead to 3-0.
- The offense remained hot in the top of the third, as RMC got runners on the corners, thanks to a Stolze double and James Baffone (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) single. Quici took advantage once Baffone stole second, as he ripped a single to left, driving two in for a 5-0 cushion.
- With two outs in the top of the fourth, the Lemon and Black remained relentless, as Duff singled to right center and was put into scoring position with a Stolze walk. With the scoring chance, RMC put together one of its most impressive hitting streaks yet, as four Yellow Jackets tallied singles to take a 9-0 lead. All in consecutive at-bats, Baffone, Justin Lanouette (Chantilly, Va./Freedom), Quici and Hawton-Henley sprayed singles to both sides of the field, keeping the line moving heading into the bottom of the inning.
- The Yellow Jackets continued the scoring in the top of the fifth, as Wernoski and Duff both laced singles and Stolze walked to get three of the first four runners on. Then, Baffone forced an error from the Eagles, permitting two baserunners to score for an 11-0 lead. Once Baffone stole second, a sacrifice fly from Lanouette pushed Stolze home for a 12-0 score. Quici was hit by his 13th pitch of the season, which led to Hawton-Henley tallying another single up the middle for his second RBI of the game, putting the count at 13-0. Bowles was then struck and awarded first to load the bases and a walk from Wernoski increased the run total to 14. Back-to-back walks from Schmitt and Duff forced the last two runs of the inning in, rounding the count out at 16-0.
- Mary Washington got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, as three singles and a wild pitch got its first runner across. The Eagles were able to get two more in the inning, as sacrifice fly outs and ground outs put them down 3-16.
- In the top of the seventh, Michael Lavanga (Alexandria, Va./Bishop O'Connol) walked after Hawton-Henley was hit by a pitch. Wernoski moved the freshman to third with a fly ball, which allowed Hawton-Henley to use some heads up baserunning to score on a wild pitch. Duff then came up and ripped his game-high fourth hit of the day, as his single drove Lavanga in for run 18. RMC then got to a 19-3 score as a result of a double from Stolze.
- The home team used two walks and a batter hit by pitch to get their fourth run. A fielder's choice from the Eagles gave them their second run of the inning, finishing with a 19-5 score.
