ASHLAND, Va. - Men's Lacrosse hosted the Roanoke College Maroons on Senior Day, where the Yellow Jackets fell short on Saturday afternoon.

The Basics
Score: Roanoke 11, Randolph-Macon 7
Venue: Ashland, Va. // Randolph-Macon College // Day Field
Records: Randolph-Macon (11-4, 5-3 ODAC); Roanoke (11-4, 7-2 ODAC)

How it Happened
  • The Yellow Jackets opened up the scoring on an unassisted goal from Peyton Rodriguez (Santa Barbara, Calif./Bishop Diego Garcia), grabbing an early lead. Over the next eight minutes, the RMC offense outshot Roanoke 12-3 but could not find the back of the net. At the 4:18 mark, the Maroons applied pressure to Senior goalie Jack Isaacs (Coquitlam, Canada/Centennial), forcing him to make a turnover, which they capitalized on to level the score at one apiece. Roanoke flipped the offensive momentum and tallied another goal with 2:18 left in the quarter. With just one second remaining on the game clock, Patrick Cullen rifled a buzzer-beater into the net to take a 3-1 advantage into the second quarter.
  • The Maroons continued to press the attack and scored two unanswered goals in the first two minutes of the second frame. Isaacs made a key save at the 11-minute mark and sent a feed to Owen King (Fallston, Md./Fallston), who took the ball himself down the field on the clear and recorded a pole goal for RMC to cut the lead to three. Two minutes later, Roanoke added a pole goal of their own on the clear from Brayden Phillips. At the 5:19 mark, the Maroons struck once again to extend their lead to 7-2. 20 seconds later, RMC responded when Grant Sobel (Mechanicsville, Va./Christchurch) threaded a pass to Logan Sinsebox (Monkton, Md./Hereford) to cut the RC lead to four. With 11 seconds left in the first half, Andrew Bergesen (Olney, Md./Sherwood) sliced his way through the Maroons' defense to put the Yellow Jackets within three heading into the break.
  • Coming out of the break, RMC wasted no time finding the back of the net, just seven seconds into the start of the third frame, Bergesen struck again, cutting the deficit to two. At the 9:40 mark, the Maroons answered the Yellow Jackets' run when Cullen added his third goal of the game to push the score to 8-5. The Roanoke defense held Randolph-Macon's offense quiet, shutting them down for the next eight minutes. At the 1:40 mark, the Maroons extended their lead back to four goals and closed out the quarter with a 9-5 lead.
  • Three minutes into the start of the final frame, Sobel added an unassisted goal of his own to get the Yellow Jackets within three. The Yellow Jackets went into a 10-man ride after Roanoke forced a shot clock violation and from their own defensive third, the Maroons' goalie, Alex Feuer, heaved the ball down the field, beating the RMC 10-man ride to add the 10th Roanoke goal of the afternoon. At the 1:42 mark, Sobel and Sinsebox combined for another goal, making the score 10-7. With 12 seconds left in the game, RC added one final goal to close out the game with a final score of 11-7.
