SALISBURY, Md. – The Yellow Jackets used a 15-to-four hits advantage, including a two-run homer from
Carter Wuestenhoefer (Hartsdale, N.Y./PDG Academy) to mark the first hit of his collegiate career, to sweep the series and rout the Sea Gulls, 5-2.
The Basics
Score: (RV) Randolph-Macon 5, #12 Salisbury 2
Venue: Salisbury, Md. // Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium // Salisbury University
Records: (RV) Randolph-Macon (16-11, 7-6 ODAC), #12 Salisbury (20-9, 0-2 C2C)
How It Happened:
- In the bottom of the first, the Sea Gulls used a one out double to put a man into scoring position, before the following batter singled to create a 1-0 lead.
- Randolph-Macon was instantly able to respond in the top of the second, as Justin Lanouette (Chantilly, Va./Freedom) got on base with a double down the right field line. Once Jack Bowles (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) moved him to third with an infield single, Jacob Hauk (Ellicott City, Md./Loyola Blakefield) ripped a single through the left side, driving Lanouette in to tie the contest 1-1.
- The Yellow Jackets took the lead in the top of the fourth, thanks to a strong start from Bowles, who singled to right. In the following at bat, Wuestenhoefer picked the perfect time to register his first collegiate hit, as the freshman nuked a homer over the left field fence to put his team ahead, 3-1.
- The home team took one back in the bottom of the fourth, as a single, walk and fielder's choice put runners on second and third. They were only able to get one across and it was unearned, as a tough infield throw made the score 3-2 RMC.
- Randolph-Macon was able to extend its lead in the top of the sixth, as singles from Lanouette and Bowles got Yellow Jackets on first and second. James Baffone (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) then used an infield single to the pitcher to load the bases. Zach Stolze (Towson, Md./Loyola Blakefield) then checked in as a pinch hitter and ripped a single up the middle, driving Bowles and Lanouette in for a 5-2 advantage.
By The Numbers:
- The Lemon and Black led Salisbury 15-to-four in hits, giving the team a five-to-one advantage in RBI.
- RMC obliterated the OPS battle, pacing SU .963 to .391.
- In earning an extra 11 at bats (38-to-29), the Yellow Jackets still only tied the Sea Gulls in runners left on base (seven-to-seven).
- Lanouette tallied a career-high three hits, including a double, to go along with two runs and a walk to pace the Yellow Jackets.
- Bowles was right with Lanouette, as the right fielder also had three hits and two runs to provide consistency for RMC.
- Wuestenhoefer posted the first collegiate hit of his career, as his two-run shot gave Randolph-Macon the go-ahead run. His two RBI also marked the highest among all players in the contest.
- Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) and Zach Wernoski (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) each tallied two hits to give the team baserunners.
- Hauk, Baffone, Stolze and Jon Quici (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) rounded out the Yellow Jacket offense with a hit each.
For the Record:
- With his two hits today, Schmitt now has 197 in his career. With the mark, he surpassed Greg Meleski (195 hits, 2006-09) for the seventh-most in program history.
