How it Happened
- A little over one minute into the start of the game, Laila Omar (Annandale, Va./Falls Church) threaded a pass to Emma Moxham (Street, Md./Garrison Forest School) to open up the scoring. At the 12:04 mark, Reese Toth (Edgewater, Md./South River) fed McNeally to double the Yellow Jackets' lead. Over the remainder of the first quarter, the Lemon and Black maintained their two-goal lead with Roanoke making five turnovers, of which RMC caused three. Senior goalie Gillian Gladden (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) made three key saves to keep the lead.
- At the start of the second quarter, the Maroons shut down the Yellow Jackets' momentum, cutting the lead to one. RMC found the back of the net at 9:09 when Toth and McNeally combined for another goal. Two minutes later, the Yellow Jackets added another goal to extend the lead to three when Hailey Pierce (Mechanicsville, Va./Mechanicsville) cashed in on a free-position shot. At the 6:58 mark, Grayson Cornelius (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) fed Lilly Fowler (Phoenix, Md./Notre Dame Prep) for her first goal of the game, lifting RMC ahead 5-1. The Maroons answered the run with three goals of their own at 6:07, 5:37 and 4:01, putting them behind by one goal. At the 2:40 mark, Moxham tallied her second goal of the game on a free-position opportunity, shutting down Roanoke's momentum. One minute later, Fowler dished a pass to McNeally to complete the hat trick and extend the lead to three goals once again. With 43 seconds left on the clock, the Maroons capitalized on the power play to put them within two as the teams head into halftime.
- Roanoke came out of the break, recording the first goal of the second half on the momentum they gained from the final minute of the second quarter. At the 11:22 mark, Moxham fed Toth to put the Yellow Jackets ahead by two, shutting down the Maroons' two-goal run. Four minutes later, Caty Benton (Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin) received a pass from Elaina Creekmore (Pasadena, Md./Old Mill), adding the ninth goal for the Lemon and Black. Benton scored another goal 41 seconds later, when she sliced her way through the Maroons' defense, pushing the score to 10-6. At 6:26, the Maroons answered with a goal from Zoe Blair, cutting the RMC lead to three. At the 5:06 mark, Toth finished a feed from Fowler, making the score 11-7. Exactly two minutes later, Roanoke buried its eighth goal of the contest from Blair on the power play. In the closing seconds of the third frame, Fowler and McNeally combined once more to extend the Yellow Jackets' lead to 12-8.
- In the final 15 minutes of regulation, Roanoke was the team to strike first with 11:58 on the clock, making the score 12-9. At the 8:13 mark, McNeally netted a power-play free-position goal, extending the lead to four once again. Less than one minute later, the Lemon and Black tallied their 14th and final goal of the contest when McNeally fed Fowler. The Maroons added their tenth and final goal of the game at the 3:56 mark. The Yellow Jackets anchored down defensively, shutting down the Roanoke attack with Gladden making two saves to keep the Maroons out of the net, earning a 14-10 victory.
Inside the Numbers
- McNeally led the Yellow Jackets' offense with six points overall on five goals and one assist. She recorded a hat trick in both of this week's games.
- Fowler contributed five points this afternoon on two goals and three assists.
- Moxham and Toth both found the back of the net twice.
- The Maroons outshot the Yellow Jackets 24-23 overall and RMC had a slight edge in shots on goal, 16- 13.
- Draw controls were a key factor in the Yellow Jackets' win; they controlled 18 of the 26 draws. Pierce came down with eight draw controls for RMC.
- Moxham had an excellent defensive stat line, tallying five draw controls, causing three turnovers and scooping up two ground balls.
- The Yellow Jackets completed 13 of their 17 clears for a .764 clear percentage. The Maroons completed 15 of their 17 clears for a .882 clear percentage, holding the advantage over RMC.
- In the ground ball department, Roanoke scooped up 16 ground balls to the Randolph-Macon nine.
- Lesnevich, McNeally and Omar each recorded one ground ball in the contest.
For the Record
- Fowler continues to add to her record book totals; she is up to 117 career assists, putting her four assists behind Kelly Egan (2009-12) for the top three all-time in assists.
