ASHLAND, Va. - Men's Lacrosse was locked into a fierce showdown with (RV) Hampden-Sydney on Saturday afternoon in a game that would feature three overtime periods in their ODAC season opener.

How it Happened
- Hampden-Sydney opened the scoring for the game when Nick Wilkins buried a shot at the 13:22 mark. Three minutes later, RMC responded when Andrew Bergesen (Olney, Md./Sherwood) connected with senior attackman Matt Carter (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run), leveling the game at one apiece. For the next ten minutes, both teams traded offensive opportunities, with the Lemon and Black finding the back of the net on a goal from Bergesen, assisted by Charlie Violette (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy). With 20 seconds left in the first quarter, H-SC netted back-to-back goals, one at 19 seconds on the clock and the other at 13 seconds to close out the first frame.
- Off the first faceoff of the second quarter, Carson Mingo (Cambridge, Md./Gilman) flipped the ball forward to himself, slicing through the defense and recording the equalizing goal to make the score 3-3. At the 12:49 mark, the Tigers stole the lead again on a goal from Kavin Wood. 10 minutes later, after each defense hunkered down, H-SC extended its lead to two goals with 2:59 left before halftime. RMC tried to find the net before halftime to cut the lead, but the Tigers maintained their lead heading into the break.
- RMC came out of the break with offensive momentum, Bergesen connected with Charlie Hilgartner (Severna Park, Md./Severn), cashing in on the man-up opportunity to cut the H-SC lead to one. At the 7:16 mark, RMC went on a three-goal run with Grant Sobel (Mechanicsville, Va./Christchurch), Mike Allen (Williamsburg,Va./Jamestown) and Bergesen, assisted by Will Robertson (Lutherville, Md./Calvert Hall), all found the back of the net in 48 seconds, pushing the score to 7-5. At the 4:01 mark, the Tigers shut down the Yellow Jackets' run with a goal from Cole Palmer, cutting the lead to one. Two minutes later, H-SC cashed in on an offside penalty with Nick Winchell assisting Brown Parker to make the score 7-7, closing out the third frame.
- At the 13:14 mark in the final frame, Sobel took the ball himself, beating the Tigers' defense and grabbed the lead for the Lemon and Black once again. The Yellow Jackets played disciplined defense for the next 11 minutes. With exactly two minutes left in the game, Kavin Wood connected with Davis Mack in front of the goal, who shoveled the ball into the back of the net, leveling the game. The two teams finished regulation with the score tied at 8-8.
- Throughout the first two overtime periods, RMC had opportunities to close out the game. Still, shots from JT Harvey (Ruther Glen, Va./Riverbend) and Nick Harrington (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) connected with the post. H-SC outlasted RMC and with 17 seconds left in the third overtime period, Kavin Wood connected with his teammate Broder Conley in front of the net, shovelling the ball once again for a goal in front of the net.
Inside the Numbers
- Bergesen led the Yellow Jackets on offense with four points on two goals and two assists.
- RMC and H-SC were equal in shots overall, but the Lemon and Black held the advantage in shots on goal, 22-to-20.
- Sobel recorded two goals for two total points against the Tigers.
- In the ground ball department, the Yellow Jackets scooped up 29 ground balls while the Tigers picked up 21.
- On the clear, Hampden-Sydney went 25-30 (83.3%) and Randolph-Macon went 24-29 (82.7%).
- Carter, Hilgartner, Allen, and Mingo each recorded a goal against Hampden-Sydney.
