Yellow Jackets Edge Seahawks 11-9 in a Midweek Showdown

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Yellow Jackets battled the Seahawks on Jamie L. Roberts Field Wednesday night for a midweek showdown, earning an 11-9 win.

How it Happened
  • At the 9:00 minute mark in the first quarter, Andrew Bergesen (Olney, Md./Sherwood) took a shot that the Seahawks keeper saved. He picked up his own rebound and fired home a shot for a 1-0 lead. Six minutes later, Grant Sobel (Mechanicsville, Va./Christchurch) connected with Logan Sinsebox (Monkton, Md./Hereford) to tally his sixth goal of the season. 15 seconds later, Sinsebox connected with freshman defender Owen King (Fallston, Md./Fallston) off of the faceoff, extending the Yellow Jackets' lead to 3-1. At the 2:30 mark, St. Mary's College (Md.) tallied its first goal of the night, stopping the RMC three-goal run. With time about to run out in the first frame, Sinsebox and Sobel combined for a goal with one second on the clock, carrying a 4-1 lead into the second quarter.
  • Five minutes into the second frame, the Seahawks' Gavin McKay cut into the Yellow Jackets' lead, making the score 4-2. At the 5:37 mark in the second, Charlie Hilgartner (Severna Park, Md./Severn) sliced through the SMCM defense, sinking a shot to put the Lemon and Black ahead by three once again. One minute and ten seconds later, Bergesen tallied his second goal of the night similarly to his first. At the 3:51 mark, Bergesen completed the hat-trick, extending the lead to 7-2. SMCM shut down the Yellow Jackets' run with 1:06 left on the clock on a goal from Declan Horton. 23 seconds later, the Seahawks cut the lead back to three. With 32 seconds left in the half, Bergesen buried his fourth goal of the game, assisted by Sobel. The Seahawks grabbed one final goal in the first half with five seconds left on the clock from McKay.
  • Coming out of the break, RMC kept the momentum rolling when Sobel found Sinsebox for the Yellow Jackets' ninth goal. At the 10:54 mark in the third quarter, Hilgarnter recorded his 12th goal of the season, putting the Lemon and Black ahead 10-5. Six minutes later, McKay struck once again for SMCM, cutting the deficit to four goals. RMC maintained its four-goal lead heading into the final quarter. 
  • A little over a minute and 30 seconds into the final frame, Hilgartner added his third of the night and the final Yellow Jackets' goal of the contest. At the 12:55 mark, Horton added another goal for the Seahawks, making the score 11-7. Three minutes later, SMCM added an eighth goal, cutting the lead to three. The Lemon and Black stepped up on defense and did not allow another goal until 42 seconds were left in the final frame. The Lemon and Black continued the solid defense and ended regulation with an 11-9 win over the Seahawks.
Inside the Numbers
  • Bergesen, Sinsebox and Sobel each tied for a team-high four points against the Seahawks.
  • Hilgartner tallied three points overall on three goals on the stat sheet.
  • King scored one goal, picked up five ground balls and recorded a team-high four caused turnovers.
  • Bergesen picked up seven ground balls, leading the team, followed closely by Mike Allen (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown), scooping up six.
  • Allen added two caused turnovers to his six ground balls.
  • RMC outshot SMCM 36-35 overall and each team recorded 18 shots on goal.
  • Turnovers proved to be a big factor in the game for the Yellow Jackets, committing 19, while the Seahawks turned the ball over 22 times.
  • In the ground ball department, SMCM held the advantage, scooping up 35 to RMC's 31.
  • The Lemon and Black held a slight edge in transition, going 23-26 (88.4%) while St. Mary's (Md.) went 23-29 (79.3%)
  • Carson Mingo (Cambridge, Md./Gilman) won seven of his 15 faceoffs, for a 46% winrate from the faceoff x.
