Nine Yellow Jackets Score as RMC Rolls Past Shenandoah, 18-7

WINCHESTER, Va. - Men's Lacrosse traveled to Winchester, Virginia, on Saturday afternoon, where it saw nine different Yellow Jackets find the back of the net during a powerful offensive display against Shenandoah.

How it Happened
  • RMC opened the scoring 52 seconds into the game, when Grant Sobel (Mechanicsville, Va./Christchurch) connected with Andrew Bergesen (Olney, Md./Sherwood). Two minutes later, Logan Sinsebox (Monkton, Md./Hereford) added the second goal of the afternoon for the Yellow Jackets. Sobel added his first goal of the game on an assist from Owen King (Fallston, Md./Fallston) at the 11:15 mark. The Lemon and Black continued to press the offensive momentum when Sobel found Grant Johns (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) for the fourth goal in the first five minutes of the game. At the 9:28 mark of the first quarter, the Hornets got on the board with an unassisted goal from Cody Griffis, making the score 4-1. With 6:31 on the clock, Charlie Hilgartner (Severna Park, Md./Severn) buried a shot to extend the Yellow Jackets' lead to four. With under one minute left, RMC closed out the first quarter with two unanswered goals from Matt Carter (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) and Sinsebox, assisted by Sobel.
  • The Yellow Jackets continued the scoring when Sobel and Sinsebox connected for the eighth goal of the contest. At the 13:37 mark of the second quarter, Sinsebox capitalized on the man-up scenario with a pass from Sobel, extending the lead to 9-1. Three minutes later, Griffis added a second goal for the Hornets, cutting the Lemon and Blacks' lead to eight. At the 8:50 mark, junior Hunter Drake (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) found Bergesen in transition for the 10th Yellow Jacket goal. Bergesen added an unassisted goal with 3:54 on the clock, pushing the score to 11-2. 34 seconds later, Griffis scored once again, adding the third goal for Shenandoah. With 31 seconds left on the clock before the break, RMC added one more goal from Sobel to take a 12-3 lead into halftime.
  • At the start of the second half, Ryan Ho added a fourth goal for Shenandoah, assisted by Luke Petrie with 11:04 on the clock. At the 10:11 mark of the third quarter, an unassisted goal from JT Harvey (Ruther Glen, Va./Riverbend) sparked a 4-0 run for the Yellow Jackets. Over the next three minutes and 45 seconds, Sobel, Bergesen and Carter each found the back of the net during the run, with Nathan Sutty (Hockessin, Del./Salesianum) and Sobel earning assists on two of the goals, extending the Yellow Jackets' lead to 16-4. With 3:04 left in the third frame. Mike Allen (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) found JJ Phillips (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) to make the score 17-4. RMC closed out the quarter with disciplined defense as the Yellow Jackets entered the last quarter of regulation. 
  • In the opening minutes of the quarter, both teams traded possessions and offensive opportunities until the 9:12 mark. Griffis, assisted by Sam Poster, found the back of the net, making the score 17-5. At the 7:16 mark, Petrie added a goal to pair with his assist for the sixth goal for the Hornets. At just a little over five minutes left in regulation, Chap Hale (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry), assisted by Matthew Sutty (Hockessin, Del./Salesianum), netted the 18th goal for the Lemon and Black for a 12-goal lead. With 1:35 left in the game, the Hornets tallied one final goal while man-down for an 18-7 scoreline. RMC closed out the final minute and a half of the game in Winchester, earning an 18-7 conference win.        
Inside the Numbers
  • Sobel set a new single-game career high with nine points overall on six assists and three goals, leading the RMC offense.
  • Bergesen and Sinsebox each recorded four goals in the win.
  • Carter found the back of the net twice for two points.
  • Hale, Harvey, Hilgartner, Phillips and Johns each recorded a goal in today's contest.
  • King, Allen, Drake, Matthew Sutty and Nathan Sutty each tallied an assist.
  • The Yellow Jackets outshot the Hornets 50 -24 overall and 32-to-16 in shots on goal.
  • In the ground ball department, RMC scooped up 42 to SU's 32.
  • Will Robertson (Lutherville, Md./Calvert Hall) picked up a team-high seven ground balls and went 8-13 (61.5%) from the faceoff x. Carson Mingo (Cambridge, Md./Gilman) picked up four ground balls and went 8-12 (66.6%) from the faceoff x.
  • Brodie Kent (Coquitlam, Canada/Centennial) picked up three ground balls and caused three turnovers this afternoon.
  • The Lemon and Black went a perfect 22-22 today in transition and on the ride held the Hornets at 19-22.
  • Jack Isaacs (Coquitlam, Canada/Centennial) played 45 minutes, making six saves and allowing only four goals. Logan Dax (Towson, Md./Boys Latin) played the final 15 minutes and made three saves.

  • Kent eclipsed 100 career caused turnovers with the three he recorded in today's win against Shenandoah.
