How it Happened
- Two minutes into the start of the contest, RMC opened the scoring on an unassisted goal from Peyton Rodriguez (Santa Barbara, Cali./Bishop Garcia Diego). Three minutes later, Andrew Bergesen (Olney, Md./Sherwood) caught a feed from Grant Sobel (Mechanicsville, Va./Christchurch) to extend the Yellow Jackets' lead to two. At the 8:44 mark, the Generals shut down RMC's two-goal run. Nick Harrington (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) scooped up a ground ball in the defensive zone, carrying it the length of the field and connecting with Logan Sinsebox (Monkton, Md./Hereford) with 7:21 on the clock to make the Yellow Jacket lead two goals once again. Senior keeper Jack Isaacs (Coquitlam, Canada/Centennial) made two outstanding saves to keep the Lemon and Black in the lead, while the defense forced WLU to make three turnovers, limiting their scoring chances. With six seconds left in the quarter, the Generals found the back of the net to cut the Yellow Jackets' lead to one goal heading into the second 15 minutes of play.
- After a save by Isaacs and a successful RMC clear, Hunter Drake (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) connected with Sinsebox for the fourth goal of the evening. At the 9:10 mark, the Yellow Jackets netted another goal on a shot from Bergesen, assisted by Grant Johns (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock), pulling away with the lead 5-2 with 9:10 left in the half. Four minutes later, WLU found an answer on an unassisted goal from Elliot Cohen. After a timeout from RMC at 5:03 on the clock, chaos ensued with a ground ball scrum where Bergesen scooped up the ball and rifled a shot past the WLU keeper, keeping momentum in favor of the Lemon and Black. Bergesen added a man-down goal to his evening with 2:01 on the clock for a 7-3 Yellow Jacket lead. For the next two minutes, RMC played lockdown defense trying take the four-goal lead into halftime. Right before the Buzzer sounded on Day Field, WLU took the ball down the field and found the back of the net to cut the lead to three.
- Both teams traded possessions in the opening minutes of the third quarter. At the 9:07 mark, with the shot clock running down, Matt Carter (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) took a shot from the alley that bounced its way through into the net, which gave RMC another four-goal cushion. One minute later, the Generals answered, tallying their fifth goal of the contest. With 5:45 on the clock, WLU was called for offside, putting RMC on the man-up. Freshman Jake Dudley (Locust Grove, Va./Woodberry Forest) cashed in on the chance, keeping the game out of reach for the Generals. The Yellow Jackets' defense made two massive stops with Isaacs holding down the net to close out the third frame with a 9-5 lead.
- The Generals looked to Rally in the final frame, scoring just under a minute into the period on a goal from James Haley. Over the next eight minutes, both defenses anchored down, with each team getting called for a shot clock violation. At the 5:01 mark, the Lemon and Black broke through the defensive stalemate with Johns and Bergesen connecting once more to make the score 10-6. RMC's defense over the next four minutes held the Generals to 50 percent on the clear and forced a costly turnover to not allow the comeback. WLU rattled off the next two goals, one at the 1:36 mark and the other with 36 seconds left in the game. With the final seconds winding down, Will Robertson (Lutherville, Md./Calvert Hall) won the faceoff to Mike Allen (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown), who scooped up the ground ball and sealed the win over the Generals.
