How it Happened

  • Tankersley got the scoring started with a goal less than two minutes into the game to five RMC an early 1-0 edge. The next two goals went in favor of the Generals, but RMC got a goal from Nick Harrington (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) to even the score at two, which it remained for the final eight minutes of the stanza.
  • Jack Twomey (Reston, Va./Gonzaga) hit Matt Carter (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) streaking down the field to give RMC a 3-2 lead a minute into the second quarter. The lead doubled with a man-down goal for Harrington's second of the game with 12:37 until half. After W&L cut the deficit back to one, Tankersley buried his second goal, followed by a tally by Peyton Rodriguez (Santa Barbara, Ca./Bishop Garcia Diego) to push the RMC lead to 6-3. The second quarter scoring didn't stop there, as the Generals found the back of the net again with 7:25 left, followed by a JT Harvey (Ruther Glen, Va./Riverbend) goal two minutes later. Once again, the Generals tallied a goal, but were answered by Tankersley and Mike Allen (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) giving RMC their largest lead of the day at 9-5. W&L scored with 1:09 left, and then again eight seconds later to cap the second quarter scoring, a frame that featured 12 goals.

The Generals pushed across two more goals over the remainder of the frame to knot the score at 10 entering the fourth.
  • Both teams capitalized on extra man opportunities in the fourth, as W&L took the lead with 12:30 to go, followed by the equalizer by Matthew Sutty (Hockessin, Del./Salesianum) with 27 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
  • In the extra frame, RMC was stopped on a shot with 1:51 to go that led to a fast break by W&L, allowing them to score the game-winner with 1:36 left to win 12-11.
