SALISBURY, Md. – Sophomore
Jack Bowles (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) went 2 for 4 with two runs and one RBI as the Randolph-Macon baseball team was outscored 17-7 at seventh-ranked Salisbury on Thursday afternoon.
The Basics
Score: Salisbury 17, Randolph-Macon 7
Venue: Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium
Records: RMC 14-9, SU 20-5
How It Happened:
- The Sea Gulls tallied two in the first and four in the second before the Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard in the top of the third. Bowles had a leadoff single, went to second on a walk to sophomore Zach Wernoski (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill), moved to third on a flyout by junior Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) and came home on a sacrifice fly by senior Aaron Lautenschlager (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) to make it 6-1.
- SU added two in the third before RMC put up a crooked number in the fourth. Senior Aidan Pinto (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) had a leadoff double and freshman Mason Bodnar (Arlington, Va./St. John's Prep) followed with a walk. Junior Elias Brooks (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) reached on a fielder's choice as Bodnar was out at second. Junior Jordan Hill (Norfolk, Va./Granby) doubled to knock in Pinto and Brooks scored on a groundout by Bowles as the score became 8-3.
- After the Sea Gulls put up another run in the fourth, the Yellow Jackets responded in the sixth. Bowles had a one-out single and scored on a two-out double by Schmitt. A Lautenschlager single plated Schmitt to cut the deficit to 9-5.
- SU scored five in the fifth before RMC added a pair in the seventh. Freshman pinch-hitter Brian Fleming (Rehoboth, Del./Cape Henlopen) drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a single by Bodnar. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Fleming came home on a sacrifice fly by Hill and Bodnar scored when Wernoski reached on an error to make it 14-7.
- The Sea Gulls scored three in the bottom of the seventh to end the game at 17-7.
