Lanyon Breaks Total Bases Record in Split with Roanoke


ASHLAND, Va. - The 12th – ranked Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets saw Amanda Lanyon (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) break the program record for career total bases with her two singles in game two of a split with Roanoke.

How it Happened

Game 1:
  • Tori Powell (Freeman, Va./Mecklenburg County) started the game with a single up the middle and was moved to third on a double by Reagan Hill (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen). Powell was able to score with a sacrifice flyout by Kayla Davis (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead.
  • In the second inning, Blayne Talley (Richmond, Va./Cosby) singled to shortstop, stole second and moved over to third on a passed ball. Talley and Randolph-Macon benefited from the passed ball with a sacrifice flyout by Jacy Ramos (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) to score Talley. The two first inning sacrifice flyouts gave the Lemon and Black a 2-0 lead. 
  • Powell continued her hot offensive play for Randolph-Macon, lacing a double down the left field line to begin the third inning. The sophomore later crossed home on a Talley bullet single up the middle, pushing the lead to 3-0 for the Yellow Jackets.
  • Gracie Ellis (New Kent, Va./New Kent) finished off a masterful complete game shutout, retiring the Maroons in order in the seventh inning. Randolph-Macon would take game one of the doubleheader by a score of 3-0. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Ellis started the game for the Lemon and Black, tossing seven complete shutout innings to get her 16th victory of the season. The senior allowed only three hits and struck out five. This is the tenth shutout of the season for the New Kent native.  
  • Talley ended the first game going 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
  • Ramos and Davis accounted for the other two RBIs in the opening game for the Yellow Jackets.
  • Powell recorded a multi-hit game with a double on the day.
How it Happened

Game 2: 
  • Roanoke struck first in the second game of the doubleheader with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Adriana Rivera singled up the middle and Kassidy Lancos followed by reaching first with an error by the Yellow Jackets. Madison Courts brought both runners home with a home run over the center field fence, giving the Maroons the 3-0 lead.
  • In the top half of the fifth inning, Allie Bell walked and later crossed home on a Rivera single. The one run extended the Roanoke lead to 4-0, heading into the bottom of the fifth. 
  • Randolph-Macon had the bases-loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning but could not come away with any runs. 
  • In the seventh inning the Maroons had two runs on two hits to extend its lead to 6-0 with three outs to get in the bottom half of the inning.
  • In the bottom half of the inning, Ashley Bush (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) was hit by a pitch and two singles by Courtney Guthrie (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) and Lanyon loaded up the bases. Powell kept the inning and game alive with an infield single to score Bush for the Yellow Jackets first run of the game. Roanoke would record the final out of the second game and gain a split with Randolph-Macon, winning 6-1.   
Inside the Numbers:
  • Guthrie started game two for Randolph-Macon and took the loss. The junior tossed seven complete innings and gave up six runs on seven hits.
  • Powell was responsible for the lone RBI in the two hit game for the Yellow Jackets. 
  • Lanyon also ended the day with two hits in game two. 
For the Record:
  • Lanyon ended the day with 331 career total bases, breaking the program record that was previously held by Sharese Jarvis'15 with 330.
