Rogan, Wagenhauser Pace Men's Volleyball in Tri-Match

STEVENSON, Md. - Kody Rogan (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) tallied a season-high 50 assists as RMC Men's Volleyball pushed Stevenson to five sets after a competitive showing against #4 Stevens.

How it Happened vs. Stevens
 
  • Stevens started fast, getting ahead of Randolph-Macon early 7-2. A kill from Mitchell Wyatt (Prince George, Va./Prince George) brought the Yellow Jackets within four, but Stevens would score the next five straight to make the score 15-6. Davis Luck (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) and Tyler DeMeritt (Rota, Spain/David G. Farragut) each recorded a kill but the Ducks would take the first set, 25-15.
  • Bryce Matthews (Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill) drew an early 3-3 tie in the second set with a kill. Stevens rattled off three straight to go up 9-5. Rogan set up Wagenhauser for another kill to bring Randolph-Macon back within striking distance, but Stevens responded with a kill to maintain a four-point lead, 19-15. The Rogan to Wagenhauser connection made another appearance to decrease Stevens' lead to 20-17, but the Ducks closed out a second-set victory with five straight scores.
  • Another early tie found the Yellow Jackets and Ducks knotted six thanks to a Wagenhauser kill. A block by Matthews gave Randolph-Macon an 8-7 lead, and a kill from Wyatt kept the Jackets ahead by one, 10-9. The Ducks regained the lead with three points in a row. Another three-point run put Stevens up 18-13. Nick Futrell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) and Matthews tried to kickstart a comeback attempt for the Yellow Jackets, but Stevens would close out the match with a 25-21 third-set victory.
 
Inside the Numbers vs. Stevens
 
  • Wyatt paced the Yellow Jackets with eight kills on 15 attempts, hitting .400.
  • Rogan led Randolph-Macon with 22 assists. The junior also contributed two kills and five digs for the Jackets.
  • Wagenhauser recorded six kills and four digs.
  • Matthews had four kills, two solo blocks, and two block assists to go along with one dig.
  • Owen Hahn (Henrico, Va./Tucker) also added two kills and a block assist

How it Happened vs. Stevenson
 
  • Stevenson jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead in the first set. Randolph-Macon tied it up, 5-5, with kills from Bryce Matthews and Ian Wagenhauser. The Yellow Jackets stayed ahead by one until the Mustangs tied it up at 10. Kody Rogan recorded a kill to put the Jackets up 17-15. Late in the first set, Matthews had a kill, and Rogan teamed up with Nick Futrell on a block to lift the Jackets to a close first-set victory, 25-23.
  • Stevenson started the second set hot as they sprung out to a 7-3 lead. They would grow their lead to six halfway through the second set and take a 17-11 lead. The Yellow Jackets would score six of the next seven points to make it a one-score set. A block from Matthews tied the set up at 21 a piece. The Mustangs would score four of the last six to take the second set, 25-23.
  • The Mustangs and Jackets were neck and neck to start the third set, tying at five. Stevenson would go up 14-8 with a big stretch of points. A Matthews' kill brought the Jackets back within two points. The Mustangs stayed in the driver's seat after that to take set three, 25-20.
  • Another tight start led to the fourth set being knotted at 13 a piece. The tight set continued before Wagenhauser took over with two straight kills to give the Jackets a 20-18 lead. The Mustangs tied it up at 22 and again at 27 before Owen Hahn and Wagenhauser tallied back-to-back kills to force a fifth set with a 29-27 win.
  • Similarly, the final stanza kicked off with a 7-7 start. The Mustangs pulled ahead by three despite kills from Wagenhauser and Matthews to hold on for a 15-12 set win and a 3-2 match victory.
 
Inside the Numbers vs. Stevenson
  • Wagenhauser paced the Lemon and Black with 26 kills. The Glen Allen High School graduate also added 12 digs, an assist, and a block assist.
  • Matthews had two blocks and 11 digs to go alongside 13 kills.
  • Brady Plucker (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) led the Jackets with 18 digs and also contributed four assists.
  • The Yellow Jackets out-blocked the Mustangs 11-5.
  • Wyatt added nine kills and three digs.
  • Rogan tallied a season-high 50 assists, three block assists, and 10 digs.
