Women's Lacrosse Scores Five Goals in Final Five Minutes to Stun #16 Christopher Newport


ASHLAND, Va. - Randolph-Macon women's lacrosse scored five goals in the final five minutes complete the comeback and take down #16 Christopher Newport 12-10 on Day Field.

How It Happened
  • Randolph-Macon opened up the game with a goal by Lilly Fowler (Phoenix, Md./Notre Dame Prep) that was assisted by Rianna Lowery (Bel Air, Md./Notre Dame Prep) to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead. The Captains would tie up the game with a free position goal with 10:22 left in the first quarter. Fowler got on the assisting end of a Cami McNeally (Severna Park, Md./Archbishop Spalding) goal to swing the lead back to the Lemon and Black two minutes later. Christopher Newport answered for a second time with 6:58 on the clock to tie up the game at 2-2. Randolph-Macon ended the quarter with back-to-back goals by Evie McNeally (Severna Park, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and Cami McNeally to take a 4-2 lead into the second quarter.    
  • In the second quarter, the Captains turned up the intensity on both ends of the field and scored all three goals in the 15 minute quarter, taking their first lead of the game at 5-4 at halftime. 
  • The lead and momentum swings continued to happen in the third period, as the Yellow Jackets buried back-to-back goals by Taylor Mittelstadter (Chesterfield, Va./Manchester) and Cami McNeally, taking a 6-5 lead with 12:47 on the clock. Christopher Newport outscored the Lemon and Black 2-to-1 the rest of the quarter and the game would be tied 7-7 heading into the final 15 minutes.  
  • In the fourth quarter, the Captains made their run, scoring three straight goals and with 5:54 left in the game posted a 10-7 lead. Randolph-Macon was not done and would rattle off three goals in a minute and a Fowler tremendous run at goal tied up the game with 4:24 left in the game. The Lemon and Black were able to hold possession of the ball out of the draw circle and drew up a play that saw Fowler feed a wide open Elaina Creekmore (Pasadena, Md./Old Mill), the shot would beat the Captains goalkeeper. The goal would give Randolph-Macon a 11-10 lead and Anna Snoddy (Palmyra, Va./Fluvanna County) put the game to bed with a goal with 2:22 left on the clock. Christopher Newport had one more opportunity to score and Gillian Gladden (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) capped off the comeback with a save to seal a 12-10 stunner.   
By The Numbers
  • Christopher Newport outshot Randolph-Macon 30-26 in the entire game. The Yellow Jackets also went 13-for-20 in clear attempts. 
  • The Lemon and Black won the draw control battle with 16 to the Captains 10.
  • Fowler recorded her second straight seven point game with three goals and four assists. 
  • Cami McNeally notched her second straight game with three or more goals. The sophomore ended the game with three goals for three points. 
  • Mittelstadter scored two goals and assisted another goal for the Yellow Jackets. 
  • Lowery scored a goal, assisted a goal and caused two turnovers for the Lemon and Black. 
  • Creekmore had an impressive game with a goal, an assist, two ground balls and four draw controls.
  • Natalie Moul (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) controlled three draw controls and scooped up three ground balls on the evening.
  • Taylor Sung (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) caused a turnover and had two ground balls. 
  • Gladden received the win for Randolph-Macon in goal and recorded a career high 16 saves.

  • The win is the first win over Christopher Newport since the 2015 season
