Men's Volleyball Downs Roanoke, Stevenson in Tri-Match

ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon Men's Volleyball swept Roanoke in conference play and added a four-set win over Stevenson in a home tri-match on Saturday.

How it Happened vs. Roanoke
  • The two sides split the first ten points of the match before a 4-0 run gave the Maroons a 9-5 lead. RMC got the deficit down to three points multiple times, but the Maroons won four of five points to give them an 18-12 advantage. Seven of the next nine points went in favor of the Jackets to cut the lead down to one. RMC then won six of the final eight points of the set to complete the comeback and take set one, 25-22.
  • The Yellow Jackets opened the second set by taking the first four points and stretching the lead out to 6-1. Roanoke stormed back to tie the score at seven before RMC re-opened the lead at 15-9. The Maroons cut the deficit to three at 20-17 before RMC won five of the final six points to take set two, 25-18.
  • The Lemon and Black were hot from the start of the third set, taking a 10-3 lead after winning the first six points of the set. They never let the Maroons start a comeback as the Jackets maintained a double-digit lead for most of the set. The final four points of the frame went in favor of the home side as RMC earned the sweep with a 25-11 set three win.
Inside the Numbers vs. Roanoke
  • Bryce Matthews (Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill) led the team with nine kills and hit .304. He also had an ace, a solo block, two block assists, and four digs.
  • Kody Rogan (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) totaled 23 assists along with three solo blocks, two block assists, six digs, and an ace.
  • Matteo DeLuca (Glen Allen, Va./Maggie Walker Governor's School) had a team-high eight digs and three aces.
  • Nick Futrell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) registered a solo block and four block assists.
  • Ian Wagenhauser (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) finished with eight kills and two block assists.
  • RMC finished with six solo blocks and 12 total blocks.
How it Happened vs. Stevenson
  • The Yellow Jackets captured six of the first eight points of the match to take an early lead. They kept rolling to extend the lead out to seven points at 13-6. The Mustangs fought back as they trailed 17-12 but a 3-0 run for the Yellow Jackets helped them extend the advantage back out. The two teams traded points the rest of the set as RMC took the opening frame, 25-17.
  • Stevenson started strong in the second set, as they took four of the first five points. RMC found their footing but couldn't flip the lead in their favor as they trailed 12-10 before a 4-1 run gave Stevenson a 16-11 lead. A 3-0 run later cut the deficit down to one at 19-18 and eventually tied the score at 21. Stevenson had set point at 24-22 but RMC battled back to knot it at 24. The Mustangs grabbed the final two points to win the second set, 26-24.
  • RMC led 7-4 early in the third stanza, but a 3-0 run by Stevenson tied the score. After the set was tied at nine, RMC rallied for seven of the next nine points to take a 16-11 lead. The Mustangs then surged to bring the deficit down to one point at 22-21, but the final three points went in favor of RMC to give them a pivotal set three win, 25-21.
  • A 4-0 run early on had RMC in good position, holding a 9-4 lead. Stevenson cut it to two at 10-8, but RMC shifted momentum in their favor with a 6-2 run to build a 20-13 lead. The Mustangs wouldn't waver, cutting the deficit to four, but it wasn't enough as the Yellow Jackets took set four, 25-20.
Inside the Numbers vs. Stevenson
  • Wagenhauser totaled 20 kills, a season-high, along with a .371 hitting percentage, three block assists, and six digs.
  • Rogan registered 40 assists, 14 digs, and six kills.
  • Phillip Van Essendelft (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) dominated down the stretch of the match with two solo blocks and two block assists. He also had nine kills, hitting .471.
  • Matthews finished with 10 kills and six block assists.
  • Brady Plucker (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) totaled 11 digs.
  • Futrell also was strong at the net with seven block assists.
  • RMC hit .301 in the match.
