How it Happened
- The Royals jumped out to an early 10-6 lead in the first set. Randolph-Macon closed the gap to two points, making it 12-10 with a kill from Ian Wagenhauser (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run). EMU stayed ahead by no more than five points en route to a first set victory, 25-20.
- The Yellow Jackets claimed an early 6-2 advantage to start the second set. Three consecutive points via a kill, a service ace, and an attack error contributed to Randolph-Macon's 19-10 lead. EMU drew within five, but the Jackets evened the match score, winning set two, 25-20.
- The third set featured a back and forth start with both squads meeting at five. The Lemon and Black scored eight of the next 12 to pull ahead 13-9. A kill from Phillip Van Essendelft (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) and one from Kody Rogan (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) gave Randolph-Macon a 20-14 lead. Each team scored another five points giving the Jackets a second straight set win by a score of 25-19.
- An identical 5-5 start to the fourth set was followed up by four points in a row by the Jackets. The lead grew to seven via three Wagenhauser kills. The Royals scored four straight before the Yellow Jackets closed out the contest with another 25-20 set win.Â
Inside the Numbers
- Rogan led the team with a season-high 44 assists and 10 digs. He also added two solo blocks and a block assist.
- Wagenhauser paced the Jackets with 18 kills followed by 11 from Van Essendelft and 10 from Mitchell Wyatt (Prince George, Va./Prince George).
- The Yellow Jackets recorded 6 aces to just three for the Royals.
- Brady Plucker (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) contributed 10 digs.
