How it Happened
- Shenandoah came out aggressive at the start of the first quarter, registering its first shot within the first minute, followed be a penalty corner and shot on goal in the third minute of the game. After Valentina Ambrogi-Torres (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal School) made the stop, RMC earned its first penalty corner but were unable to get a shot off. The Hornets then came down the field and scored the first goal of the game, as Camryn DeLeva put her team up 1-0 in the fourth minute. In the remaining 11 minutes of the quarter, each team only recorded one shot each, as Kylee Gorham (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland) was able to direct her shot on goal.
- The second frame saw the Hornets gain slight momentum, as they earned a penalty corner just 30 seconds in. After a successful defensive possession, the Yellow Jackets were then forced to make another stop, as Ambrogi-Torres made her second save of the game. The Lemon and Black then earned their first penalty corner opportunity five minutes into the quarter. Even though they were unable to convert, they went on to hold the Hornets to just one more shot in the half. In doing so, the road team earned a penalty corner opportunity with two minutes remaining in the half but were unable to tally a shot, as Shenandoah still held its 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
- Shenandoah applied pressure early in the third, earning two penalty corners and firing two shots in the first three minutes. Courtney Moodie (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey) countered with a shot of her own, as a result of RMC's first penalty corner of the frame. The Yellow Jackets earned two more penalty corners before the fourth quarter. Despite Samantha Major (Newport News, Va./Menchville) getting a shot on goal after the penalty corners, her squad still trailed by one after three quarters of play.
- The Hornets recorded two shots on goal from their first penalty corner of the quarter but Ambrogi-Torres was able to make both saves. After Shenandoah's second penalty corner of the frame, the Hornets fired another shot at Ambrogi-Torres but she was able to continue her clutch play. In the final five minutes, the the Yellow Jackets' goalkeeper, was forced to make another five saves, bringing her total to 12. Despite Randolph-Macon's resilient defensive effort, Shenandoah captured a 2-0 victory, as Reagan Flory scored with four seconds remaining.
