Randolph-Macon Only Allows One in Home-Opening Contest

ASHLAND, Va.  Despite the Yellow Jackets recording a loss in their first home game of the season, RMC only allowed one goal over its 60 minutes of play.

Score: Catholic 1, Randolph-Macon 0
Venue: Randolph-Macon College // Nunnally Field
Records: Randolph-Macon (1-1, 0-0 ODAC), Catholic (1-1, 0-0 Landmark)

How it Happened
  • For the opening five minutes, Randolph-Macon had a slight edge in possession time and earned a penalty corner, after a shot from Olivia Greene (Amissville, Va./Culpeper County) was blocked. Catholic then regained the pressure, posting two shots as a result of a penalty corner with 3:15 remaining in the first, but Valentina Ambrogi-Torres (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal School) saved the attempt on-goal. With under two minutes to play, the Yellow Jackets nearly scored off their second penalty corner of the game. Even though the score remained 0-0 after one, the Lemon and Black retained possession to close the frame.
  • Once RMC defended an early penalty corner from the Cardinals, Janne Roelink (Den Helder, Netherlands/Norfolk Collegiate) worked for a fast-break opportunity and posted a shot wide. Kylee Gorham (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland) followed with a shot on goal with just under 10 minutes left in the second, but the Cardinals made the save. In the final two minutes, RMC found itself down a player, but Hailey Swartzbaugh (Poquoson, VA./Poquoson) was able to retain possession and did a good job to close out a scoreless half.
  • The Yellow Jackets earned a quick penalty corner out of the break, but it was Catholic who defended and came downfield to score, earning a 1-0 advantage 2:45 into the third. With five minutes remaining in the frame, RMC earned back-to-back penalty corners, with Natalie Moul (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) taking a shot wide. Shortly after, CU switched the field and forced Ambrogi-Torres to make another stop, after a shot headed for the outside post. The score would then stay 1-0 Cardinals after three.
  • While it was Catholic starting the fourth with momentum, a shot from Roelink helped the Lemon and Black get back into the offensive end. RMC retained its momentum for a 10-minute span, as a nice defensive play from Addy Wicker (Henrico, Va./Deep Run) helped keep the Cardinals from getting a shot on goal. Even though the Yellow Jackets provided some intensity, a penalty corner in the final minute helped CU secure a 1-0 win.
