How it Happened
  • The two programs opened the contest with a handful of fouls during the first five minutes. Randolph-Macon earned the first penalty corner and drilled the first goal of the game on the first shot between either team. Breea Dresler (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) inserted to Caitlin Porter (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam), who found McKayla Clark (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) for the 1-0 lead with 5:23 left in the quarter. Neither team was able to establish any offensive pressure in the remaining minutes of the frame, allowing RMC to retain its edge into the second quarter.
  • Valentina Ambrogi-Torres (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal School) was tested on the first possession of the second quarter, as the Generals recorded a pair of shots on goal. Once the Yellow Jacket keeper pushed them away, RMC earned two penalty corners in a five-second span. Randolph-Macon was able to get a shot off, as Janne Roelink (Den Helder, Netherlands/Norfolk Collegiate) had her shot blocked. W&L flipped the field to put another shot on goal and despite a save from Ambrogi-Torres, Lee Britty Page picked up the rebound and scored to tie the contest, 1-1. Three minutes later, the home team worked for another penalty corner in which they were able to convert, taking a 2-1 lead with 6:06 left in the half. The Generals kept the pressure on and got another penalty corner after play resumed. Madeline Lancione scored for Washington & Lee to establish a 3-1 lead for her team before halftime.
  • Roelink worked into the offensive zone and tested Helenka Chodakiewicz with a shot but the W&L keeper held firm. While Washington & Lee responded with a penalty corner 3:54 into the third, the Lemon and Black defense blocked one shot and saved another. The following minute, Ambrogi-Torres stepped up and made another save to keep the team within two. She went on to make one more stop in the final two minutes of the third, preserving a 1-3 score prior to the final frame.
  • Washington & Lee retained momentum into the fourth, forcing the Yellow Jacket goalkeeper to make a stop at the 36 second mark. Five minutes later, RMC forced a shot wide to prevent any potential attack from the Generals. With the advantage, W&L hunkered down on defense for the final 10 minutes, preventing the Lemon and Black from getting another attacking chance at the end of the game.
