How it Happened
- Virginia Wesleyan jumped out to an early 4-2 lead in the first set before the tide changed for RMC, igniting a 12-2 run to seize a 14-6 lead. The two sides traded two-point runs for most of the remainder of the set as the Marlins could never find their footing to work their way back into it. RMC would go on to win set one, 25-18.
- The momentum continued for RMC into the second set as they began the frame with a 9-5 lead. The Yellow Jackets' lead was 13-10 before VWU used a 3-1 run to cut the lead to one. RMC held the lead for a few more points but then the Marlins went on a 6-2 run to take the lead for the first time since the early going at 20-18. RMC stopped the run by cutting the lead back to one but VWU won five of the final seven points to even the match at one.
- Similar to the second set, RMC got out to an early lead in the third, holding a 7-3 advantage. The Jackets steadily held the lead at a comfortable margin but VWU fought back with a 4-0 run to make the score 15-14. RMC answered with their own 5-0 run to push the lead back out to 20-14, but once again, VWU found their way back in it with a 4-0 run. After a point by RMC, another Marlins' 4-0 run ensued to tie the score at 23. The Jackets got a kill from Matthew Carrol (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) to finish a 3-1 run to end the set and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
- The fourth set was close as the two sides traded leads for much of the frame. VWU held an 18-16 lead before a kill by Ian Wagenhauser sparked a 5-1 run that would give RMC control. The Marlins were able to stop the run with a point but the momentum was too much to handle as the Yellow Jackets closed the match with a 4-1 run that would give them a 25-21 set four win.
