Lanyon Caps off Record Setting Night with a Walk-Off


ASHLAND, Va.Amanda Lanyon (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) broke the career stolen base record with her second stolen base in game one. The junior also went 5-for-8 at the plate to lead the Yellow Jackets to a sweep over Sweet Briar.

How It Happened: 

Game 1
  • Randolph-Macon got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning, scoring two runs. Lanyon and Naomi Sadler (Emporia, Va./Brunswick) hit back-to-back singles to begin the inning. Kayla Davis (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) singled home Lanyon to break the ice in the game. Olivia Owens (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) grounded out to third base as Sadler was able to score to double the Yellow Jacket lead. 
  • Gracie Ellis (New Kent, Va./New Kent) and Jordan Brown (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) recorded back-to-back singles to begin the bottom of the second. Blayne Talley (Richmond, Va./Cosby) sacrifice bunted both runners over into scoring position. Lanyon singled down the right field line to bring home Ellis from third base. Sadler scored Brown on a sacrifice fly out to center field to end the inning with a 4-0 lead for Randolph-Macon.
  • In the third inning, Brown tripled down the left field line to score Owens who walked to begin the inning. Lanyon singled through the right side of the infield to plate Brown from third and Talley scored the third run of the inning on a throwing error by Sweet Briar. The Lemon and Black now would take a commanding 7-0 lead after three full innings. 
  • Baughan ended the game with a one out single in the fifth inning to score Talley for the eighth run of the game, as Randolph-Macon took game one 8-0.        
By The Numbers
  • Lanyon led the Yellow Jackets at the plate with three hits in four plate appearances. The junior also recorded two RBIs and stole three bases in the five inning game. 
  • Sadler was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 and had an RBI and a stolen base. 
  • Brown recorded two hits with an RBI triple and scored two times. 
  • Davis and Owens both recorded an RBI in the game.
  • Ellis was the winning pitcher in the circle for the Yellow Jackets in five complete innings. The junior is now 14-0 on the season and in game one she allowed only two hits and walked one with five strikeouts in the shutout. 
How It Happened: 

Game 2
  • In game two, Lanyon started the game off with an infield single and later scored on a Baughan single down the right field line. Baughan was plated by a Brown single up the middle to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead early.
  • Sweet Briar scored one run in the second third innings, guided by a pair of triples down the right field line to tie up the game at 2-2 after three innings. 
  • Baughan went a four inning run of perfect game pitching in the circle for Randolph-Macon. The Vixens only allowed two hits by Madison Drew Faries (Colonial Heights, Va./Colonial Heights) in those same four innings to take the game to a 2-2 score into the bottom of the seventh inning. 
  • Lanyon was clutch once again in the bottom of the seventh inning, as she smoked a single up the middle to score Faries to give the Yellow Jackets a 3-2 walk-off victory.
By The Numbers
  • Baughan got the complete game win in the circle for the Yellow Jackets. The senior notched her tenth win of the season, giving up only six hits and fanned four batters. She also recorded an RBI in the game to have a solid day on both sides of the field. 
  • Lanyon went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. 
  • Faries was 2-for-2 off the bench and scored the winning run in the seventh inning. 
  • Brown had an RBI in game two for Randolph-Macon.   
For the Record
  • Lanyon ended the day with five stolen bases and with her second stolen base in game one, she broke Amanda Sopko'15 all-time career record that was 85.
Things to Watch
  • Lanyon extended her hit streak to 23 straight games and also has extended her on-base streak to 29 straight games, dating back to last season. 
  • Randolph-Macon extended its win streak to fourteen in a row that dates back to March 26th in which softball tied DePauw 6-6. The last time the Yellow Jackets dropped a game was on March 19th in a split with #13 Virginia Wesleyan to begin conference play.

Randolph-Macon softball will head on the road to Eastern Mennonite for a weekend doubleheader on Saturday, April 20 for a 1 p.m. ODAC doubleheader.
