How it Happened
- RMC came out firing, scoring the opening two goals of the game, the first scored by Avery Tankersley (Baltimore, Md./Boys Latin) and then Austin Payne (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) gave the Yellow Jackets a two-goal advantage just three minutes in. Just over a minute later, the Generals got on the board but both teams were held scoreless the rest of the quarter as RMC led 2-1 after the first frame.
- The beginning of the second quarter was all Generals as they went on a 5-0 run over the first five minutes to give them a 6-2 lead. Bubba Bowen (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) notched a man-up goal to stop the run and JT Harvey (Ruther Glen, Va./Riverbend) followed suit to cut the lead back to 6-4. WLU then scored three goals in a two-minute span to take a commanding 9-4 lead into the halftime break.
- The Jackets wouldn't go away in the second half, scoring the first two goals out of the break, one by Cooper Hauser (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) and the other being Austin Payne's second goal of the night. After the Generals tallied a goal, Tankersley found the back of the net again, making the score 10-7. Once again, WLU scored to push the lead to four, but the Jackets got another, this time by Jack Smith (Stevensville, Md./DeMatha Catholic) to bring the deficit to 11-8 heading to the fourth.
- The lead was cut to two after Harvey's second tally of the night began the fourth quarter. WLU kept their distance with another goal but RMC wouldn't go away as Smith scored another to make it 12-10 with 2:46 to go. The Yellow Jackets had an opportunity to cut it to one, but WLU scored an empty net goal with 18 seconds left, pushing the lead out of reach. Payne would score his hat trick goal with a second to go but it was too late as the comeback fell short.
