Men's Volleyball Tops #24 Stevenson in Four Sets on Senior Day

ASHLAND, Va. – Phillip Van Essendelft (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) finished with 12 kills and hit .476 as RMC men's volleyball topped #24 Stevenson in four sets.

How it Happened:

RMC had two kills in the first four points to help them take a 4-0 lead out of the gate. The Mustangs found their footing, cutting the deficit down to two at 11-9 but a 3-0 run extended the lead back out to 14-9. Stevenson would go on a 3-0 run of their own that brought the lead back but the teams traded goals until the Mustangs finally tied it at 20. Stevenson took their first lead with set point at 24-23 but RMC won back-to-back points to retake the lead. After trading points, RMC finally capped off the set winning 29-27.
Stevenson grabbed momentum to begin the second set, holding a 7-2 lead early on. The Mustangs continued their strong set by extending their lead out to 15-6 after a 4-0 run. RMC could never work their way back into it as the teams traded points but Stevenson would take a 25-15 win in the set.
Both squads traded 3-0 runs to begin the third set. After Stevenson built a 13-10 lead, RMC took the lead and extended with a 7-1 run, making it 17-14. The run continued as RMC made the lead 22-17 and rolled through the rest of the set to take a pivotal set three, 25-21.
The beginning of the fourth set was good to the Yellow Jackets as they opened with an 8-3 lead. After being down 10-5, Stevenson ignited an 8-2 run to take the lead 13-12. Stevenson held an 18-16 advantage when the tide turned in the Yellow Jackets' favor. They went on a 9-3 run the remainder of the set to win 25-21 and earn the home victory.

Inside the Numbers:

RMC hit .385 in the first set with 15 kills and was even better in the third with a .538 hitting percentage in the third set, totaling 16 kills with just two errors.
Phillip Van Essendelft hit .476 with 12 kills. He also had two block assists.
Kody Rogan (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) led the team with 27 assists along with 12 digs.
Bryce Matthews (Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill) notched 12 kills and hit .320.
On his senior day, Cade Terrell (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) totaled 13 assists.
Matthew Carrol (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) led the way with four service aces. He also had five kills and five digs.
