How it Happened:
- RMC came out of the gates red hot, storming out to a 10-3 lead in the first set. The Raiders brought the deficit back within three at one point but as soon as they did, a 4-1 run by the Yellow Jackets put the run to rest. RMC cruised the rest of the way in the set to easily take set one, 25-18.
- The Yellow Jackets jumped out to another lead to begin the second set, this time a 4-1 lead but the Raiders quickly knotted the score back at seven. The largest lead of the set came at 18-13 in Rutgers' favor. They had another five-point lead at 21-16 but then RMC flipped the tide with a 7-2 run to tie the score at 23 a side. The score flipped back-and-forth as the Raiders had set point multiple times until finishing the set, winning 28-26.
- The close match continued into the third set, as the teams were neck-and-neck at 16-16 before a 5-1 RMC run was then answered by a 4-0 run by the Raiders, forcing an RMC timeout with the score tied at 21. Neither side could pull away by the 25-point mark so once again, the set was extended. The score reached the 30s as the trading of points continued until Brooks Cowart (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) got a kill to push RMC to a set-three win, 32-30.
- The Raiders were the ones who jumped out to the 4-1 run to start the set this time but RMC answered with a 3-0 run to knot it at four. Rutgers slowly built up a 14-9 lead as errors by the Yellow Jackets fueled the run. A 7-2 run for RMC ensued that brought the score back to 16-16. RMC took their first lead of the set at 21-20 and a block turned it into 22-20, forced a Rutgers timeout. The run extended even further as RMC led 24-20. A kill by the Raiders was short-lived as RMC finished the match to win 25-21.
