How it Happened:
- Stevenson jumped out to an early lead in the opening frame, leading 9-4. A 5-2 run by RMC cut the lead to 11-9 but the Mustangs extended the lead back to 16-10. Stevenson would halt any RMC effort to come back, going point-for-point with each other as the Mustangs closed out set one to win 25-19.
- RMC was the team that took the lead to begin the second set, holding a 5-1 advantage. Stevenson knotted the score at five but RMC held off the Mustangs, not letting them take the lead. After the score was tied 11-11, the Yellow Jackets went on a 6-0 run to build a 17-11 lead. A 6-1 run for Stevenson ensued to cut the deficit to one. The Mustangs took their first lead of the set at 25-24 and capped off the 3-0 run to end the set by winning 26-24.
- A 3-0 run helped Stevenson open a 9-6 lead early on in the third set. They would extend that lead out to 14-8. A 5-2 run brought the deficit within three but that was as close as it got until RMC cut it to two at 24-22. The Mustangs won the final point to earn the sweep 25-22.
Inside the Numbers:
- Bryce Matthews led the team with 12 kills and hit .381 on the day.
- Philip Van Essendelft (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) was also strong, hitting .357 with six kills, having just one error on 14 swings.
- Brady Plucker (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) was the lone Yellow Jackets player with double digit digs with 11.
- Kody Rogan (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) and Cade Terrell (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) combined for 32 assists in the match.
