RMC Baseball Splits DH with Alvernia

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) had three hits, one run and one RBI as the Randolph-Macon baseball team split a season-opening doubleheader with Alvernia on Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened: Game 1
  • The Yellow Jackets and Golden Wolves were scoreless through the first five innings. RMC starter Drew Ramos (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) fanned seven over the first four innings with one hit and four walks. AU scratched for a run in the top of the sixth to break the scoreless deadlock.
  • RMC would rally in the bottom of the frame. Webb had a leadoff single to left and went to second on an infield hit by senior Anthony Farmakides (Falls Church, Va./McLean). Sophomore Eli Brooks (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) pinch-ran for Farmakides. Following a pitching change, junior Aidan Pinto (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) drew a walk to load the bases. With one away, Webb scored on a wild pitch on a swinging strikeout. Brooks moved to third on the wild pitch and scored on an errant throw to the plate as the Yellow Jackets took a 2-1 advantage.
  • Junior Sam Slevin (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank Cox) took over on the mound and fanned two in a scoreless seventh to record his first save.

  • Webb went 2 for 3 with a run.
  • Farmakides also went 2 for 3.
  • Junior Gavin Tomlin (Capron, Va./Camp Community College) earned the win in his RMC debut, tossing two innings with one hit, one run, two walks and two strikeouts.
How It Happened: Game 2
  • AU started the scoring in the top of the second, plating three runs on one hit.
  • RMC got one back in the bottom of the second. Junior Chaz Harvey (Charlottesville, Va./The Miller School) was hit by a pitch with one away. He advanced to second on a single by sophomore Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) and went to third on a walk to senior Richie Dudley (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson). Freshman Jon Quici (Philadelphia, Pa./Conestoga) delivered a sacrifice fly to center in his first collegiate at-bat to bring home Harvey and make it 3-1.
  • The Golden Wolves added one in the top of the fourth before the Yellow Jackets again responded in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman Zach Wernoski (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) drew a one-out walk and scored on a double by Webb to pull within two at 4-2.
  • RMC had a two-out rally in the fifth. Schmitt was hit by a pitch, went to second on a single by Dudley and scored on a base hit by Quici to make it 4-3.
  • The first two Golden Wolves reached on walks in the top of the sixth. Junior Bere Bauers (Phoenixville, Pa./Devon Prep) took over on the mound. An attempted sacrifice bunt turned into a 2-4-6 double play. A lineout to center ended the threat.
  • RMC stranded one in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth and two in the seventh to come up one run short.

  • Schmitt was 2 for 3 with a run.
  • Dudley went 2 for 2 with a walk.
  • Sophomore Colin Casey (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) fanned six in two hitless innings of relief.

RMC will head to Georgia for three games this weekend. The Yellow Jackets will play at Piedmont on Friday, Feb. 23, face Wilmington on Saturday, Feb. 24 and meet Hanover on Sunday, Feb. 25.
