How it Happened
- Virginia Wesleyan was awarded a corner in the first two minutes of the game and put a shot on goal, but it was stopped by Valentina Ambrogi-Torres (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal School). Four minutes later, the Yellow Jackets earned two corners and on the second, Ashlyn White (Frederick, Va./Urbana) sent a shot from the top of the circle, which Alaina McCoy (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford)Â deflected to Mackenzie Wunderlich (Midlothian, Va./Trinity Episcopal).Wunderlich then put it in front of the cage to be tipped in by Cali Kujawa (Hampton, Va./Kecoughtan), who put the Yellow Jackets on the board.
- The Marlins put pressure on RMC early in the second, getting a corner and two shots on goal in the first minute of the frame. They were able to even the score at one exactly two minutes into the second stanza and then took the lead with a breakaway score to make it 2-1 with seven and a half minutes until half.
- RMC controlled the possession for nearly the entire third quarter. After a penalty corner in the first two minutes, RMC got a penalty stroke which was sent wide, but the pressure didn't stop there. The Yellow Jackets had five more penalty corners and four more shots on goal for the remainder of the quarter, but the Marlins kept their 2-1 lead.
- Momentum flipped back into the Marlins' favor in the fourth quarter, and they added some cushion to their lead with a reverse chip over Ambrogi-Torres to make the score 3-1. With five and half minutes to go. The Marlins held strong through an RMC penalty corner with just over a minute to go, stopping two shots to secure the win.
