How it Happened
- Both teams had their chances in the first quarter. The Hornets received the first corner of the game just 51 seconds into the game but the first save of the night by Valentina Ambrogi-Torres (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal School) kept SU scoreless. RMC got their first penalty corner at the 10-minute mark of the first frame, but no score to show for it as the first quarter ended in a scoreless tie.
- Hailey Swartzbaugh (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson) made two defensive saves in the first seven minutes of the second frame. The second of which was made by Swartzbaugh all alone in the goal as the last line of defense on a breakaway. The Hornets continued to put pressure on the Yellow Jackets' defense and were awarded a penalty stroke with 29 seconds remaining. The shot went wide right to keep the score knotted at zero entering the half.
- Shenandoah got two penalty corners in the opening two minutes of the second half, cashing in on the second opportunity after a pair of great saves by Ambrogi-Torres, to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Hornets. The pressure continued by Shenandoah as they were awarded six more penalty corners in the quarter, the last resulting in the second goal of the frame to make the score 2-0.
- Shenandoah began the fourth quarter getting pressure on the RMC defense, but the tide was turned, as RMC had two penalty corner opportunities but were held off the board as SU kept their lead at two. The Hornets extended their lead to three coming off a penalty corner with just under 11 minutes remaining. SU was able to add another goal off a penalty corner with four and a half minutes to go to push the lead to four. With three minutes left, RMC wouldn't go away without a fight, getting a corner, but the lone shot on the opportunity was blocked to keep RMC scoreless.
