How it Happened
- Much of the first half of play was led by defensive efforts by both teams until the Cardinals opened the scoring. Less than a minute remaining in the half, Catholic's Niki Micciche capitalized on a corner opportunity, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
- RMC came out strong in the second half and tied the scoring just over four minutes in. A pass from Alaina McCoy (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) led Sophomore Lynn Giesken (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) to make a diving play, giving the Yellow Jackets the equalizing goal.
- The Cardinals responded with a series of shots, but Valentina Ambrogi-Torres (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) remained strong, earning four saves in the third quarter to keep the score knotted at one.
- The Yellow Jackets faced heavy pressure from the Cardinals in the opening minutes of the fourth frame, but RMC did not give way. RMC pushed forward offensively, and with just under five minutes left in the game, Isabella McNulty (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) received a pass from Alaina McCoy and deflected the ball past Catholic's goalkeeper to get the go-ahead goal.
- Catholic had a flurry of last chance opportunities, but Aja Washington (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) earned a defensive save in the final minute of play to ensure a victory for RMC.
