Fowler, Taylor Spark #5 RMC Women's Lax to Tourney Win at #4 LYN

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Freshman Lilly Fowler (Phoenix, Md./Notre Dame Prep) scored twice in the final three minutes to finish a 7-1 fourth quarter rally and junior Emma Taylor (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) saved a pair of free position shots in the final 93 seconds as the fifth-seeded Randolph-Macon women's lacrosse team rallied past fourth-seeded Lynchburg 16-15 on Tuesday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Championship.

How It Happened

  • The Yellow Jackets trailed 14-9 heading into the fourth period. Sophomore Amanda Maxwell (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) scored on a free position shot with 11:40 left to make it 14-10. Senior Italia Carnazza (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI) won the draw control and sophomore Rianna Lowery (Bel Air, Md./Notre Dame Prep), the reigning ODAC Player of the Week, scored 27 seconds later as the score moved to 14-11. After a LYN goal, sophomore Evie McNeally (Severna Park, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and Lowery both scored in a 30-second span to close the gap to 15-13. Maxwell netted a second free position shot with 4:16 remaining to pull RMC within one at 15-14. Fowler finished a free position shot with 2:42 left to level the score at 15-15. Carnazza won the draw control and Fowler scored 36 seconds later as the Yellow Jackets reclaimed the lead at 16-15. The Hornets won the draw control. Taylor saved a free position shot with 1:33 remaining and saved a second free position shot with 1:09 left. RMC was able to run out the clock and claim the victory.
  • In the first quarter, the Hornets had a 9-6 advantage on shots and 9-4 for shots on goal. LYN scored on six of its shots and saved all four Yellow Jacket shots on goal in taking a 6-0 lead after one period.
  • Taylor had a save one minute into the second quarter, the 200th save of her career. Freshman Elaina Creekmore (Pasadena, Md./Old Mill) scored 2:30 into the second period to put RMC on the scoreboard. Freshman Emma Moxham (Street, Md./Garrison Forest School) won the ensuing draw control and McNeally scored less than 30 seconds later on an assist by senior Logan Schweiger (Church Hill, Md./Queen Anne's County) as the Yellow Jackets pulled within four at 6-2. Junior Annie Bartley (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) scored on a free position shot with 9:11 remaining to make it 6-3. After a Lynchburg timeout, sophomore Taylor Mittelstadter (Chesterfield, Va./Manchester) won the draw control and Bartley scored 14 seconds later to make it a two-goal game at 6-4. After a goal by the Hornets, Lowery scored with 2:30 left, Mittelstadter won another draw control, and Bartley added a goal with 1:50 remaining as RMC pulled within one at 7-6. Lowery scored on a free position shot with 21 seconds left to tie the game at 7-7. LYN tallied a goal with two seconds left and led 8-7 at the break.
  • Lowery converted a free position shot to tie the game, her 100th career goal, and Fowler scored with 9:35 remaining in the third period as the Yellow Jackets took their first lead at 9-8. The Hornets would net the final six goals of the quarter and take a 14-9 advantage after three.

  • Taylor registered 15 saves. She now has 211 career saves.
  • RMC had five players score multiple goals. Lowery had five goals and one assist for six points. She has 102 career goals in 38 games. Bartley and Fowler both had three goals. McNeally and Maxwell both scored twice.
  • The Yellow Jackets had 16 draw controls, including a 7-2 advantage in the fourth quarter. Carnazza led all players with seven. She has 84 this season, the fifth-highest season total in program history and one away from fourth place. Moxham had four draw controls and Mittelstadter grabbed three.
  • Carnazza and senior Emily Pritchett (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) both had three ground balls. Taylor and freshman Lydia Lesnevich (Catonsville, Md./Towson) both had two.
  • Carnazza recorded three caused turnovers.
