Payne Scores Five for Men's Lacrosse in Regular Season Finale

ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon men's lacrosse team hosted Bridegwater for senior night as well as the regular season finale on Friday night. The Yellow Jackets rolled through the second and third quarter to down the Eagles 21-8.

How It Happened

  • Avery Tankersley (Baltimore, Md./Boys Latin) netted the first two goals of the game for either side, handing RMC a 2-0 lead ten minutes into the game. Two Bridgewater goals sandwiched two Yellow Jackets goals in the remainder of the quarter as RMC led 4-2 after one.
  • Duncan O'Brien (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) scored the opening goal in the second quarter followed by two from Jack Smith (Stevensville, Md./DeMatha), which was good for his 100th career goal in a Yellow Jacket uniform. RMC added two more to end the half, shutting out the Eagles and taking a 9-2 lead into halftime.
  • Avery Tankersley began the second half with his fourth goal of the game, followed by Duncan O'Brien scoring two of the next three goals to complete his hat trick. Austin Payne (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) netted three goals in the frame to push the lead out to 16-2 after the Yellow Jackets shutout the Eagles again in the third.
  • Bridgewater found their footing a bit in the fourth, scoring six goals, but RMC scored five to keep the deficit well out of reach. Bubba Bowen (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) returned to the field and scored two goals in the fourth quarter as RMC finished the win, 21-8.

By The Numbers:

  • Austin Payne led the charge with five goals on the night, his second game this season with five goals, joining the game against Whittier earlier this season.
  • Jack Smith had two goals and three assists in the game. His first goal of the game gave him 100 for his career at Randolph-Macon. He is currently two assists shy of 100 career assists as well.
  • Avery Tankersley recorded four goals and an assist. He had a hat trick by halftime while also netting another in the third quarter.
  • Duncan O'Brien notched the first hat trick of his career on senior night. He also added an assist to his credit.
  • JD Spotts (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) was solid on faceoffs, winning 15 of 25 with eight ground balls.
  • Cooper Hauser (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) had a team-high three caused turnovers in the game. He also picked up five ground balls.
