How it Happened (Game 1):

  • Naomi Sadler (Emporia, Va./Brunswick) got the first hit of the ballgame in the top of the first with a single. She stole a base and was worked around to third but was stranded there to keep RMC scoreless.
  • RMC grabbed two more hits in the second inning but couldn't get a two-out hit to drive them home as the game remained scoreless. One of Averett's two hits in the game came in the form of a double in the second inning but Gracie Ellis (New Kent, Va./New Kent) got out of the inning unscathed.
  • Naomi Sadler picked up her second hit of the game in the third inning, followed by two RMC walks but once again, Averett tightroped out of danger to keep the Yellow Jackets off the board.
  • Both pitchers continued to roll through the seventh inning as neither offense could push a run across as Ellis picked up her 10th strikeout of the day in the seventh inning.
  • RMC stranded the extra-inning baserunner on third and Averett got their second hit of the game with one out in the eighth inning which drove in the game-winning run, giving the Cougars a 1-0 win.

By the Numbers (Game 1):

  • Gracie Ellis pitched a gem, despite the loss, throwing 7.1 innings, allowing just two hits and striking out 10. She also went 1-3 at the plate.
  • Naomi Sadler was the only player on either side with multiple hits, going 2-4 with two stolen bases.
  • Kiley Lamberth (Mechanicsville, Va./Mechanicsville) picked up a hit with her single in the second inning.
  • Reagan Hill (Hanover, Va./Hanover) was the final Yellow Jackets hitter with a hit in the game, also singling in the second inning.

How it Happened (Game 2):

  • Amanda Lanyon (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) got hit by a pitch to lead off the game. She stole second and third and was brought in by a squeeze bunt as RMC took the lead 1-0 in the first.
  • RMC got the leadoff runner on again with a single by Gracie Ellis and was driven in by Reagan Hill who had a two-out double to make the score 2-0.
  • The big inning came in the third, as RMC capitalized on five hits and one Cougars error to plate six runs, capped off by a Naomi Sadler two-run single to make the score 8-0 in the Yellow Jackets favor.
  • Averett plated a run in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead to 8-1, but RMC added two more off a Kiley Lamberth double in the top of the fourth to extend the lead further to 10-1.
  • Riley Baughan (Warsaw, Va./Rappahannock) stranded two Averett runners on base in the bottom of the fourth inning and breezed through the fifth to pick up the win.
