How It Happened

  • Senior Cam Furman (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) retired the Spartans in order in the top of the first before the Yellow Jackets took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame. Junior Matt Myers (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) drew a leadoff walk and scored on a homer by senior Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby), his second in as many days and his team-leading seventh of the season. Freshman Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) and senior Hunter Cole (Norfolk, Va./Granby) walked, and a base hit by junior Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) loaded the bases. Junior Richie Dudley (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) had a sacrifice fly to right to bring home Schmitt to make it 3-0. Sophomore Lincoln Lubsen (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) had a sacrifice fly to the second baseman, plating Cole with the fourth run. Johnson delivered a single to drive in Webb as RMC led 5-0.

Webb and Iannuzzi started the inning with singles and a base hit by Schmitt knocked in Myers to make it 6-3. Cole followed with a long homer to right, his seventh of the year, to push the lead to 9-3. Webb singled and scored on a base hit by Johnson, and Lubsen reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a bases-loaded walk to Myers as the advantage grew to 11-3.
